To act, to initiate diligence, to hold the mind well, to increase as before in the meantime of dwelling well. What are the sinful and unwholesome dharmas? They are the afflictions such as the physical actions, verbal actions, and mental actions that are practiced in desire, as well as the evil deeds done by body, speech, and mind, and the afflictions that cause them to arise. Among them, those that have not been encountered and have not manifested are unborn. Those that have been encountered and have manifested are born. What are the virtuous dharmas? They are the antidotes to those, the antidotes to evil deeds, the antidotes to obscurations, and the antidotes to pervasive bonds. Those unborn and born should also be understood in the same way as sinful and unwholesome dharmas. When the sinful and unwholesome dharmas that are unborn do not arise, and in every way, all are not caused to arise, and those that have arisen and been encountered are not accepted in any way, but should be abandoned and relinquished, thus generating joy and making vows, this is generating desire. Because the sinful and unwholesome dharmas that are unborn are not caused to arise from the very beginning, joy is generated, vows are made, and there is no desire to accept them, this is the desire for the unborn not to arise. Those that have arisen are not accepted and are abandoned, this is the desire for abandonment. Those sinful and unwholesome dharmas also arise in dependence on past objects, in dependence on future objects, and in dependence on objects that arise in the present. They also depend on hidden objects and on manifest objects. Those that depend on past and future objects depend on hidden objects. Those that depend on objects that arise in the present depend on manifest objects. Among them, the hidden

For the sake of abandoning those sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen with an object as their focus, one strives to prevent them from arising, and for those that have arisen, one strives to abandon them. For the sake of abandoning those that have not arisen with a manifest object as their focus, one strives to prevent them from arising, and for those that have arisen, one initiates effort to abandon them. In this way, they are prevented from arising and should be abandoned through the initiation of effort with extreme firmness. Furthermore, one strives to prevent the arising of minor and middling afflictions that have not arisen, and to abandon those that have arisen. One initiates effort to prevent the arising of major afflictions that have not arisen, and to abandon those that have arisen. Even if one engages with a past object, one should engage with it in such a way that no afflictions arise from that object in any way. If they arise due to forgetfulness, one should not accept them, but abandon, dispel, and purify them. Just as with past objects, so too should one understand with future objects. In this way, it is said that one strives to prevent the arising of sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, and to abandon those that have arisen. Even if one engages with a present object, one should engage with it in such a way that no afflictions arise from that object in any way. If they arise due to forgetfulness, one should not accept what has arisen, but abandon, dispel, and purify it. In this way, it is said that one initiates effort to prevent the arising of sins and non-virtuous dharmas that have not arisen, and to abandon those that have arisen. Furthermore, among sins and non-virtuous dharmas, there are those that arise solely from the power of conceptualization and not from the power of the object. And there are those that arise from both the power of conceptualization and the power of the object. Among these, those that arise solely from the power of conceptualization and not from the power of the object are, for example, those that arise from past and future objects when one is abiding. Among these, those that arise from both the power of conceptualization and the power of the object are, for example, those that arise when one is walking.

Like the arising from the objects that occur now, because there is certainly non-virtuous conceptualization in them. Therefore, in order to abandon the born and unborn (afflictions) caused by conceptualization, one strives to practice. Therefore, in order to abandon the born and unborn (afflictions) caused by the power of conceptualization and the power of objects, one initiates diligence. Therefore, in order to generate the unborn virtuous dharmas, one generates aspiration, that is, for the virtuous dharmas that have not yet been attained and have not yet manifested, in order to attain and manifest them, one generates joy, wishes in the mind, and abides in the hope of attaining and manifesting more, this is the aspiration generated for generating the unborn virtuous dharmas. For the virtuous dharmas that have already arisen, in order to increase, not forget, and perfect the practice, one generates aspiration, among which "the virtuous dharmas that have already arisen" refers to the (dharmas) that have already been attained and have already manifested. For these, in order not to be separated from the already attained dharmas, and to prevent the already attained dharmas from degenerating, it is said "in order to abide." In order to make the already manifested (dharmas) more clear, it is said "in order not to forget." These already attained virtuous dharmas and already manifested virtuous dharmas, in order to perfect and reach the ultimate through continuous practice, it is said "in order to perfect the practice." Therefore, one generates joy, wishes in the mind, and abides in the hope of abiding more, not forgetting, and perfecting the practice, these are the aspirations generated in order to make the already arisen virtuous dharmas abide, not forget, and perfect the practice. Among them, "striving to practice" is for the purpose of actually practicing the already attained (dharmas). "Initiating diligence" is for the purpose of attaining the not yet attained (dharmas), therefore striving.
