Thus, the purity between mind and phenomena is called the basis to be guarded. What is guarding? As it is said, guarding the mind with mindfulness and abiding in equality is called guarding. These sense restraints, if summarized, are of two kinds: those held by the power of individual observation and those held by the power of cultivation. Among them, those held by the power of individual observation are those who see the faults in objects, and can eliminate those faults, but do not abandon them. Among them, those held by the power of cultivation are those who see the faults in objects, and can eliminate those faults, and should abandon them. Thus, the sense restraint held by the power of individual observation does not generate the entanglement of afflictions arising from objects, it only does not manifest them, but does not abandon the latent tendencies of attachment to the body, nor does it destroy them. Among them, the sense restraint held by the power of cultivation does not generate the entanglement of afflictions arising from objects, does not manifest them, and abandons and destroys the latent tendencies of attachment to the body at all times. The difference between the sense restraint held by the power of individual observation and the sense restraint held by the power of cultivation lies in this. The meaning is in this. The distinction to be made is in this. Among them, the sense restraint held by the power of individual observation belongs to the accumulation of the path. It should be known that the sense restraint held by the power of cultivation belongs to the state of detachment. What is knowing the measure of food? Thus, here, one should eat with wisdom and proper consideration, not for play, not for pride, not for beauty, not for adornment, but for the sake of this body to be sustained, to be alive, to eliminate hunger and thirst, to benefit the pure conduct, to abandon old feelings, to prevent new feelings from arising, and to nourish oneself, to gain strength and happiness, to be without fault, and to touch happiness.

One might also think that it will change. So, how should one examine and eat food separately? What is meant by separate examination is wisdom. With wisdom, one truly sees the faults of a morsel of food, and because one sees the faults, one becomes disgusted and then eats. So, what are the faults that are seen? For example, the food itself arises from the cause of enjoyment, arises from the cause of digestion, and arises from the cause of seeking. Among these, what is the fault that arises from the cause of enjoyment? For example, some people eat food that is rich in color, rich in smell, rich in taste, and very delicious. When the morsel of food is just put into the mouth, it is immediately chewed by the grinding wheel of the teeth, moistened by the collection of saliva, and completely wrapped by phlegm, and it enters the esophagus. Then, what about the previous pleasantness? In all ways, it completely disappears and becomes particularly ugly. When it becomes ugly, it is like vomit. In this situation, if the person who eats remembers its appearance in every way, then even other good things that have not yet completely become food, he will not want to eat at all. If he stays in that state, what need is there to say more? Through such a sequence of many states, in the process of enjoying food, the beautiful color disappears, and the fault of being occupied by unclean things arises, and that is called the fault that arises from the cause of enjoyment. So, what is the fault that arises from the cause of food digestion? When he has eaten the food and swallowed it, and when it is completely digested in the first or last watch of the night, his body will grow, produce, and increase various kinds of unclean things, such as meat, blood, water, tendons, bones, skin, and so on.

And it will become like that, some of those will turn into substances of excrement and urine, and after completely dissolving, the lower part will remain separate, and it must be cleared every day without interruption. If it touches any part of the hand, foot, limb, or small limb, that too will be extremely despised by oneself and others. Based on that, many kinds of bodily diseases will appear on his body, such as: tumors, cataracts, boils, tinea cruris, itching, leprosy, small rashes, vitiligo, plague, phlegm, swelling, emaciation, vomiting, hunger, ringworm, blood diseases, bile diseases, genital sores, etc. These and many other similar bodily diseases will appear on the body. He eats but cannot digest, and that will harm his body. This is like: it is called the fault arising from the complete digestion of food. So, what are the faults arising from the cause of completely seeking food? There are many kinds of faults arising from the cause of completely seeking, namely: arising from acquisition, arising from complete guarding, arising from the complete decay of friendship, arising from not knowing satisfaction, arising from unfreedom, arising from misuse. So, what are the faults arising from acquiring food? For example, some people, for the sake of the source of food and the basis of food, endure the cold when it is cold, and endure the heat when it is hot, engaging in agriculture, animal husbandry, commerce, writing, counting, joking, calculating, accounting, sculpture, and various occupations, or strive, struggle, and labor to obtain food that has not yet been obtained and to accumulate food, for the sake of food, just like for the source of food. If he strives, struggles, and labors like that, and if the ends of those works become decayed, then he will say because of that: alas, my efforts are in vain and fruitless.
