That is, the appearance of form seen by the eye, and the mind focuses on that form and arising, and sees it directly. Taking the manifest sign means that the eye does not see those forms themselves, and the mind focuses on that form and arising, although it is not seen directly, but takes similar things from other places first, and hears that there are such and such forms known by eye consciousness, and then there are related names, sentences, and manifest signs, following those names, sentences, and manifest signs, relying on and dwelling on those names, sentences, and manifest signs, that person then distinguishes the forms known by eye consciousness that he has heard, which is called taking the manifest sign. Just as it is with the forms known by eye consciousness, so it should be understood with the dharmas known by ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Taking the sign and taking the manifest sign, also because of that cause, that basis, and that dominant condition, will cause his mind to flow out sinful and unwholesome dharmas. Without that cause, without that basis, and without that dominant condition, his mind will not flow out sinful and unwholesome dharmas. Among them, taking the sign and taking the manifest sign are improper attention, because that cause, that basis, and that dominant condition will cause his mind to flow out sinful and unwholesome dharmas, therefore, the nature of taking the sign and taking the manifest sign should be completely abandoned. What are sinful and unwholesome dharmas? They are desire and the arousal of desire, the evil deeds of the body, the evil deeds of speech, the evil deeds of mind, as well as hatred, ignorance, and the arousal of ignorance, the evil deeds of the body, the evil deeds of speech, the evil deeds of mind, etc., these are called sinful and unwholesome dharmas. How can these dharmas flow out from the mind afterwards? For any object of focus, the mind and the mind, consciousness

That which arises and follows those objects and those, possessing the same as mind and intellect, and consciousness. It causes all misconduct of body, speech, and mind to arise. Since those attachment, hatred, and ignorance also arise and follow, therefore, it is called leaking after the mind. For one who completely abandons grasping at characteristics and grasping at signs, thus, between the forms to be cognized by the eye and the dharmas to be cognized by the mind, whatever defilements arise from grasping at characteristics and grasping at signs will not occur. If one is forgetful or has many defilements, when dwelling alone, if one is influenced by the forms to be cognized by the eye, which were seen before, and by the dharmas to be cognized by the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, which were previously experienced, and sinful, unwholesome dharmas arise, then one should not accept those that have arisen, but should cut them off, dispel them, purify them. Therefore, it is called practicing for the sake of restraining them. He also focuses on those forms to be cognized by the eye, which should be focused on, and those dharmas to be cognized by the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, which should be focused on, and in such a way that he never becomes defiled. Thus, he has protected the senses from those defilements. Therefore, it is called protecting the eye sense and even protecting the mind sense. He does not focus in any way at all on those forms to be cognized by the eye, on which the eye sense should not be focused, and those dharmas to be cognized by the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, on which the mind sense should not be focused. Therefore, it is called the eye sense also practicing discipline, and even the mind sense also practicing discipline. This is

In short, it should be understood that this is the extensive classification of sense restraint. So, what is the meaning of the brief summary? The meaning of the brief summary is this: what is used to guard, what is guarded, from what is guarded, how to guard, and what is the guarding itself, all of these are gathered together, and that is called sense restraint. So, what is used to guard? It is the constant maintenance of mindfulness, and the cultivation of constant diligence in mindfulness, that is what is used to guard. What is guarded? Guarding the eye faculty, and the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculties, these are what are guarded. From what is guarded? From forms, sounds, and the nature of phenomena, such as the pleasant and unpleasant, from these one guards. How does one guard? By not grasping at characteristics and not grasping at secondary characteristics, and in order to prevent sinful and unwholesome dharmas from flowing out following the mind from any basis whatsoever, one strives to accomplish this, and also guards the senses, and the senses also accomplish guarding, that is how one guards. What is the guarding itself? It is the constant guarding of the mind with mindfulness, and abiding from a state of equanimity, that is called guarding. Furthermore, the brief summary is that what is the method of guarding, what is the basis to be guarded, and what is the guarding, gathering these together is called sense restraint. So, what is the method of guarding? It is the constant maintenance of mindfulness, and constant diligence in mindfulness, and when the eye sees forms, not grasping at characteristics and not grasping at secondary characteristics, and when the mind discerns phenomena, up to not grasping at characteristics and not grasping at secondary characteristics, and in order to prevent sinful and unwholesome dharmas from flowing out following the mind from any basis whatsoever, one strives to accomplish this, and also guards the senses, and the senses also accomplish guarding, that is what is said, and that is called the method of guarding. What is the basis to be guarded? It is the eye and forms, and so on.
