It is called attachment. If one thinks, 'It is enough to be patient just a little bit,' or if one thinks, 'I should be patient with my friends and loved ones, but not with others,' or if one thinks, 'I should be patient in this direction and at this time, but not in all directions and at all times,' this is called attachment to being satisfied with just that much. Since Bodhisattvas do not have such thoughts, they are called non-attachment. If one thinks, 'If I am patient with these beings who have harmed me, they will help me,' and practices patience with that thought, this is called attachment to expecting a return. Since Bodhisattvas do not have such thoughts, they are called not becoming attached. If one thinks, 'If I cultivate patience, in the future I will have many servants and a beautiful appearance,' and cultivates patience with that thought, this is called attachment to the ripening result. Since Bodhisattvas do not have such thoughts, they are called non-attachment. Not abandoning the latent tendencies of anger, which are the opposite of patience, is called attachment to the opposite. Since Bodhisattvas have abandoned the latent tendencies of anger, they are called non-attachment. Also, since cultivating patience is not dedicated to the Lesser Vehicle, there is no distraction of attention, and since the three—the person, patience, and cultivation—are not apprehended, there is no distraction of conceptual thought, therefore it is called non-attachment. Regarding the Bodhisattva's diligence, etc., the opposite of diligence is attachment to the pleasures of sleeping and engaging in sexual activity, etc., and being lazy, as well as engaging in many worldly activities and being lazy in not engaging in virtuous activities. Since Bodhisattvas do not have such things, they are called non-attachment. Always delaying and then engaging in virtue, not quickly engaging in virtuous activities, is called attachment to procrastination. Since Bodhisattvas do not have such things, they are called non-attachment. Thinking, 'It is enough to exert effort just a little bit,' or thinking, 'I should do the work of friends and companions, but not others,' or thinking, 'I will exert effort at this time and in this direction, but not at other times and in other directions,' this is called attachment to being satisfied with just that much.

Thus, because it is not possessed by Bodhisattvas, it is called non-attachment. If one thinks that helping these sentient beings with their work will benefit oneself, and then helps them, this is called attachment to expecting a return. Because it is not possessed by Bodhisattvas, it is called having no attachment. If one initiates diligence, thinking that all future tasks will eventually be accomplished, and then initiates diligence at that time, this is called attachment to the ripening. Because it is not possessed by Bodhisattvas, it is called non-attachment. The opposite of diligence is laziness. As long as the latent tendencies of laziness have not been abandoned, the opposing factors have not been abandoned. Because Bodhisattvas have destroyed the latent tendencies of laziness, they are called non-attachment. Also, initiating diligence is not dedicated to the Hearers and other vehicles, thus abandoning the distraction of mental activity. Not contemplating the individual, diligence, and practice, thus abandoning the distraction of conceptualization, and because it is cut off, it is called non-attachment. The meditation of Bodhisattvas, etc. The opposite of meditation is attachment to mental wandering. As long as the mind wanders externally, single-pointedness of mind will not arise. Because Bodhisattvas do not possess this, it is called non-attachment. If one does not quickly engage in meditating on meditation, but delays engaging in it, this is called procrastination and attachment. Because Bodhisattvas do not possess this, it is called non-attachment. So-called small meditation is being content with what has been attained, or meditating for the sake of some sentient beings, or not meditating for the sake of some sentient beings, or meditating in some times and places, but not meditating in all times and places. This is called attachment to being satisfied with just that much. Because Bodhisattvas do not possess this, it is called having no attachment. If one thinks that meditating on meditation for the benefit of sentient beings will benefit oneself, and then meditates on meditation, this is called attachment to expecting a return. Because Bodhisattvas do not possess this, it is called having no attachment. If one meditates on meditation, having no illness in the body, etc.
