Because the latent tendencies of attachment are destroyed, it is called non-attachment. Therefore, in the treatise "Compendium of Abhidharma," it is also said: If the latent tendencies of afflictions are not abandoned, and improper attention is given, and the objects of affliction appear, then afflictions will arise. There are two kinds of attachment through distraction: distraction of attention and distraction of conceptualization. Among these, distraction of attention refers to practicing generosity and so forth in order to attain the Nirvana of the Hearers, and dedicating the merit; thus, the place to which the merit is dedicated will fall into the extreme of Nirvana. Distraction of conceptualization refers to thinking that there are three things: the giver, the receiver, and the object; thus, generosity and so forth will fall into Samsara. The Bodhisattva dedicates the merit of generosity to unsurpassed Bodhi, therefore there is no distraction of attention; they do not think that there are three things: the giver, the receiver, and the object; they give in the manner of the three circles being completely pure, therefore there is no distraction of conceptualization. Like this, without distraction, there is no attachment, therefore it is called non-attachment. Like this, in terms of the seven aspects of the opposing factors of generosity, in the "Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra" it is also said: Furthermore, son of the monk Sharadvati, Bodhisattvas do not give by seeking improper enjoyments, Bodhisattvas do not give in a way that harms sentient beings, they do not give by generating pride, and so forth, these are extensively taught. The Bodhisattva's ethics are: without attachment, without clinging, without attachment. And so forth. The opposing factors of the Bodhisattva's ethics are killing, taking what is not given, and so forth, and attachment to actual behavior. Some are attached to killing and so forth out of desire, some are attached out of hatred, and some are attached out of ignorance. Therefore, the ten paths of action are considered to be of three types: killing arising from desire, killing arising from hatred and ignorance. Like that, the side of actual behavior

Therefore, Bodhisattvas do not possess these, so they are called non-attached. To properly and correctly take vows, not taking them immediately, but contemplating and then taking them, is attachment to procrastination. Bodhisattvas do not have this attachment, so they are called non-attached. Or thinking: I will protect for a day or two, or protect for a year or two. I will not kill these sentient beings, and I will not take what has not been given. Other than these, I can harm the lives of other sentient beings, and I can take what has not been given. Thinking like this is attachment to thinking that just this is enough. Bodhisattvas do not have this attachment, so they are called non-attached. If I do not kill these sentient beings, and do not take what has not been given, it will help myself. Thinking like this and guarding the precepts is attachment to expecting a reward. Bodhisattvas do not have this attachment, so they are called not becoming attached. If I guard the precepts, I will be reborn in the realms of gods and humans. Thinking like this and guarding the precepts is attachment to the ripening result. Bodhisattvas do not have this attachment, so they are called non-attached. Not abandoning the latent tendencies of afflictions such as desire, hatred, and ignorance is attachment to unfavorable aspects. Bodhisattvas destroy and eliminate all the latent tendencies that cause bad behavior, so they are called non-attached. Properly and correctly guarding the precepts, not dedicating them to the Hearers' Vehicle, etc., therefore there is no distraction of attention. Not clinging to the three aspects of the one who keeps the precepts, the precepts that are kept, and the act of keeping the precepts, therefore there is no distraction of conceptualization. Like this, because there is no attachment to the distraction of conceptualization, it is called non-attached. In the content of "the patience of a Bodhisattva," etc., the unfavorable aspect of patience is hatred, which directly harms sentient beings. Bodhisattvas do not have this hatred, so they are called non-attached. If hatred arises towards some sentient beings, not immediately abandoning the mind of hatred, but after thinking and examining, then tolerating the later harm, this is attachment to procrastination. Bodhisattvas do not have this attachment, so they are called not...
