Thus it is said. 'The mind abides within,' which means that taking the mind away from being distracted by external objects such as forms, and placing the mind single-pointedly within, is the nature of meditation. 'Abiding in mindfulness and diligence,' which means showing the cause, is that meditation does not arise for those who are impaired in mindfulness and are lazy, but for those who have mindfulness that does not forget the object to be meditated on in the mind, and who have diligence to constantly meditate on it, samadhi will arise, so mindfulness and diligence are the cause. 'Happiness is the cause of birth,' which means showing the result, is that the birth of happiness is birth among the gods of the form realm. If one cultivates meditation, one will be born among the gods of the first dhyana of the form realm and so on, so that is the result. 'Mastery of the practice of clairvoyance,' which means that mastery of clairvoyance and mastery of practice are actions, is that if one cultivates meditation, one will gain mastery over the five clairvoyances of the eye of miraculous power and the ear and so on, and one will gain mastery over the practice of the noble ones, the practice of the gods, and the Brahma practice, in which the four truths and the three doors of liberation and so on are the practice of the noble ones. The four dhyanas of the form realm and the four formless attainments are the practice of the gods. The four immeasurables are the Brahma practice. 'The chief of all dharmas,' which means that being endowed is being with the chief of all dharmas, and the chief of all dharmas is meditation. The terms 'chief' and 'preceding' have the same meaning, and meditation precedes all dharmas. How does it precede? If the mind is placed in equanimity, wisdom arises that knows reality as it is. If wisdom arises, one will be liberated. If one is liberated, then the wisdom of liberation arises. 'In that there is and those three.' means showing entry. 'In that there is' shows the entry of the basis, because the meditation described above exists for those who cultivate meditation, but not for others. A person is a thoug

It is the basis of meditation. The term "three" indicates complete entry. As for how many types of meditation there are, it should be understood as explained in the commentaries. Having thus known meditation, the wise ones truly practice. Regarding this statement, the nature and causes of meditation, etc., are explained as mentioned above, and then the Bodhisattvas also practice in the same way, which is its meaning. Accompanied by investigation and accompanied by analysis, etc., through these, it is distinguished that there are three types of meditation, which is to explain the immovability, etc. The first and second meditations are called meditation accompanied by investigation and accompanied by analysis. The intermediate meditation and the second meditation are meditation without investigation but only with analysis. The third and fourth meditations are meditation without investigation and without analysis. Again, associated with joy and pleasure, etc., regarding this statement, it is explained in another way that there are three types of meditation: the first and second meditations are called associated with joy and pleasure, because there is physical sensation. The third meditation is called associated with happiness, because there is mental sensation. From the fourth meditation to the peak of existence is called associated with equanimity. Knowing what should be known, regarding this statement, the term "what should be known" refers to the Four Noble Truths, the Three Vehicles, the places of knowledge, etc. Knowing and arising the self-characteristics and general characteristics of these as they are, is the nature of wisdom. Mentioning "as it is" is to exclude the non-Buddhists, because those non-Buddhists distort the things to be known with characteristics such as self, permanence, etc., therefore it is wrong view, so non-wisdom should be excluded. Abiding in Samadhi, this statement indicates the cause. The cause of wisdom is Samadhi, because it is also said in the sutra that if the mind abides in Samadhi, wisdom arises that knows things as they are. Liberation from afflictions, regarding this statement, liberation from afflictions is the result of wisdom. Worldly wisdom destroys afflictions, while the wisdom of the Hearers and Self-
