E, how does one bring it to complete maturity? It means to benefit in this life, placing them in benefit; to benefit in future lives, placing them in happiness, thus bringing sentient beings to complete maturity. Among these, benefiting in this life means giving various kinds of material goods, freeing them from the harm of lacking necessities, and making them possess enjoyment. Benefiting in future lives means causing them to do good in this life, thereby enabling them to attain the happiness of gods and humans in future lives, as well as liberation from suffering. Starting from the way in which such discipline brings sentient beings to complete maturity, it is called a verse. The verse shows how discipline brings sentient beings to complete maturity. To show what kind of discipline and how it brings sentient beings to maturity, therefore, the verse is composed, which is the meaning. So, with what kind of discipline does one bring sentient beings to complete maturity? One brings sentient beings to complete maturity with five kinds of discipline. The five kinds of discipline are: constant discipline, natural discipline, completely perfect discipline, superior realization discipline, and unerring discipline. The word "constant" indicates the superior discipline. Noble Hearers, having taken vows, maintain them as long as they live. Bodhisattvas, however, from the moment they take vows until they sit at the heart of enlightenment, have discipline, therefore it is called constant discipline. Or, it is not that one first takes vows and then keeps some and does not keep others in between, but one keeps them until the end of life, therefore it is called constant discipline. The word "natural" indicates natural discipline. Having been very familiar with keeping discipline in the past, later one abides in discipline spontaneously without much effort or exertion, therefore it is called natural discipline. Or, having taken vows, if they are not broken in this life, then wherever one is born in future lives, even without hearing the nature and qualities of discipline from a spiritual friend, one naturally refrains from any faulty actions and delights in doing good deeds, this is called natural discipline.

In particular, the term "non-harming" demonstrates the complete discipline. Non-harming means not engaging in the ten non-virtuous actions. Not engaging in the ten non-virtuous actions even in dreams is called especially non-harming. If it is like that, it is called complete discipline. When it reaches the second stage of the stage of aspiration, the ten virtuous actions of the Bodhisattva are complete, because the Dharma that can especially protect—the ten non-virtuous actions—are not practiced even in dreams, so it is called complete discipline. The term "self-joy" demonstrates the discipline of superior realization. After the Bodhisattva realizes the nature of the Dharma realm's universal operation on the first ground, he sees the truth and obtains the discipline that pleases the noble ones. Initially abandoning the ten non-virtues and rejoicing in abiding in the ten virtues is called self-joy. The term "carefulness" demonstrates the discipline of constant non-confusion. Speaking what should not be spoken through the door of speech, going to places that should not be gone through the door of the body, and thinking of Dharmas that should not be thought through the door of the mind are called carelessness, and from this, confusion will arise due to transgressions and misdeeds. Not speaking what should not be spoken through the door of speech, not going to places that should not be gone through the door of the body, and not thinking of Dharmas that should not be thought through the door of the mind are called carefulness. The Bodhisattva abides in carefulness and does not experience confusion due to transgressions and misdeeds in all activities, so it is called the discipline of non-confusion. Alternatively, confusion arises from three causes. What are the three? Laziness, carelessness, and forgetfulness. The Bodhisattva abides in diligence in all activities, without laziness, carelessness, and forgetfulness, therefore, transgressions and misdeeds do not arise, so it is called the discipline of non-confusion. How does one mature sentient beings? Therefore, it is said, "Also place others in this." Just as one abides in the five disciplines, one also places other sentient beings in the five disciplines.

Therefore, by making it possess these, it makes it fully mature. How does it make it fully mature? To show that even so, there is still something else. It is said, "From one to another, mutual benefits are connected." Mutual benefits being connected refers to benefits connected in this life and benefits connected in future lives. Among these, benefits connected in this life refers to placing sentient beings in discipline, because they do good and do not do evil, so bondage and killing, etc., arising from doing evil do not occur, therefore it is benefits connected in this life. Benefits connected in future lives are also of two kinds: from one life to another, making the ripening constantly uninterrupted; from one life to another, making the result similar to the cause constantly uninterrupted. Among these, "from one to another" refers to the meaning of continuously using honorifics to other sentient beings from one life to another. To show that there are two kinds of benefits connected in future lives, it is said, "Ripening and similar to the cause, well able to mature." Protecting discipline in this life, obtaining the happiness of gods and humans in future lives is the result of ripening. Being happy to protect discipline when born in the realm of gods and humans is the result similar to the cause. Obtaining the happiness of gods and humans from that result similar to the cause is the result of ripening. There also, being happy to protect discipline is the result similar to the cause. Thus, the two, the result of ripening and the result similar to the cause, arise constantly and uninterruptedly, one generating the other, which is called benefits connected in future lives. Perfect discipline is because of especially non-harming. Not doing the ten non-virtuous actions is called non-harming. Not practicing the ten non-virtuous actions even in dreams is called especially non-harming. Thus, it is the meaning of perfect discipline. The perfection of non-harming is especially non-harming. Explaining the meaning of especially non-harming: if one perfects not doing the ten non-virtuous actions even in dreams, it is called the meaning of especially non-harming. How does one become perfect discipline? Therefore.
