What to say of other beings who are extremely dear? As bodhisattvas have the intention of benefiting and bringing happiness to sentient beings, if sentient beings want to benefit me, how should they do it to be beneficial? Although they think in many ways, such a thought of benefiting does not arise. Why is that? Even if they think of benefiting themselves, they end up placing themselves in what is not beneficial and not happy. How so? For example, thinking, "I will make myself happy," they take what is not given, and so on. And because of their actions and their causes, they experience being bound and killed in this life, and so on, so they are placed in what is not beneficial. Because of that, in future lives, sentient beings will be born in the three lower realms, such as hell, so they are placed in what is not happy. Furthermore, non-Buddhists and others think, "I will make myself happy in this life and the next," so in this life they lie in ashes, practice the asceticism of dogs and cows, jump off cliffs, and so on, placing themselves in what is not beneficial in this life. Because of that cause, in future lives they will be born in the three lower realms, so they are placed in what is not happy. This shows that worldly people have more love for themselves. Even if worldly people think of benefiting me, they do not have the same intention as bodhisattvas, who intend to benefit and bring happiness to other sentient beings. Even if friends in the world think of benefiting their friends, how could the intention of a bodhisattva arise in such a thought? It cannot arise. That is the meaning. The remaining verses explain that by what practice sentient beings are fully matured, thus showing the accomplishment of the perfections. Of these, eleven verses show how sentient beings are fully matured, and up to this point, four verses have been explained. Now there are seven verses remaining. Of these seven, six verses show by what conduct and activity sentient beings are fully matured. The final, seventh verse shows the great essence of fully maturing sentient beings. So, by what practice are sentient beings fully matured? It is by practicing the six perfections, from generosity to wisdom.

The meaning is that sentient beings are fully matured through the practice of ripening. Starting from how sentient beings are matured by what kind of giving, it is called "verses." Among the six perfections, it is also said that sentient beings are matured by the perfection of giving. Furthermore, in order to show how sentient beings are matured by giving what kind of giving, verses are composed. So, what kind of giving makes sentient beings fully mature? Sentient beings are fully matured by three kinds of giving. The three kinds of giving are: giving away one's own body and all possessions, giving without discrimination, and giving without satisfaction. "Bodhisattvas' bodies and possessions, there is nothing that is not given to others." This means giving away one's own body and all possessions. Bodhisattvas, for the benefit of sentient beings, do not spare their own things, and there is nothing left outside. To those who beg, there is nothing that is not given, such as head, eyes, hands, feet, blood, flesh, bones, fat, etc. In terms of possessions, there is nothing that is not given away and cherished, because everything such as gold, silver, grains, houses, sons, wives, servants, livestock, etc., are given away. The so-called equal giving shows the giving without discrimination. Bodhisattvas do not give to the noble but not to the lowly, give to friends but not to non-friends, or give to the wise but not to the unwise. There are no such distinctions, but they give to all sentient beings with the same attitude. The so-called inexhaustible merit shows the giving without satisfaction. The giving of Bodhisattvas does not mean that it is enough to do it for so many years or so many kalpas. Instead, it is uninterrupted every moment, and even if it is given until the end of samsara, it will never be satisfied, so it is called inexhaustible merit. So, how do these three kinds of giving make sentient beings fully mature? Therefore, it is said: "By means of two kinds of benefits, others are matured."
