The four purities are: the basis is completely pure, the object is completely pure, the mind is completely pure, and the wisdom is completely pure. The ten powers of the Tathagata are: the power of knowing what is possible and impossible, the power of knowing the karma that one has done, the power of knowing meditation, liberation, concentration, and attainment, the power of knowing the superior and inferior faculties, the power of knowing various aspirations, the power of knowing various realms, the power of knowing the path to all destinations, the power of knowing the recollection of past lives, the power of knowing death and birth, and the power of knowing the exhaustion of defilements. These are the ten powers of the Tathagata. For details, see the Sutra on the Ten Powers. The one who thoroughly deceives by means of good and bad destinies: The demon shows killing livestock, throwing into fire, etc., as a means to go to a good destiny, therefore he thoroughly deceives by means of good destinies. Conversely, one will be reborn in a bad destiny, as it is prophesied. Thus, the demon also thoroughly deceives by means of bad destinies. In order to show which power the Blessed One used to subdue the demon who thoroughly deceives by means of good and bad destinies, it is said that the Blessed One subdued the demon in the first meaning by the power of knowing what is possible and impossible. The Blessed One, by the power of knowing what is possible and impossible, knows that being born in hells etc. due to killing etc. is possible, and that being born in good destinies is impossible and without opportunity. Thus, he knows the cause as the cause and the result as the result, as it is, and also defeats the Shramanas and Brahmins who say that there is no cause or who speak of causes that are not in accordance with the proper cause. The one who thoroughly deceives by taking gods etc. as refuge when they are not refuge, is because the gods do not directly realize the path of definite liberation, therefore they are not refuge. The meaning of refuge is the meaning of protection, but they do not know the means, therefore, the cycle of

Unable to protect sentient beings from all fears of animals and evil destinies. If the demons also show those as the protectors of the world, then it is called extremely deceiving as protection. The gods extremely deceive the world with non-skillful magical powers and excellent generosity, etc. The Bhagavan is called the subduer of demons because he overcomes the demons with the power of knowing actions as their own nature. Extremely deceiving liberation in the Mahayana means that the demons proclaim non-praises to the first Bodhisattvas, thereby causing the seventh chapter of the Bodhisattva's conduct to regress and become associated with the Hearer Vehicle. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, subdue the demons who extremely deceive the liberation of the Mahayana with superior powers, superior faculties, knowledge of superior and non-superior, etc., thereby associating and instructing the Bodhisattvas with the conduct of the Bodhisattvas. Therefore, the Bhagavan is also called the subduer of demons. The four fearlessnesses are: Alas! I promise to attain perfect enlightenment, but this world consisting of gods, demons, Brahmins, ascetics and Brahmins, and gods, humans and non-humans, no one discusses me in accordance with the Dharma, saying, 'These Dharmas have been perfectly enlightened.' I have not actually seen any actual reason, so I have attained happiness here, become fearless and abide, promise the excellent position of the bull king, and turn the wheel of the assembly, which no ascetic or Brahmin in the world has ever turned in accordance with the Dharma. Alas! I promise that all defilements have been exhausted, but no one discusses me as before, saying, 'These defilements here have not been completely exhausted.' Whatever Dharma I have proclaimed that can be cut off, if practiced, will not become an obstacle, this is all (Dharma that can be cut off). Whatever Dharma I have proclaimed that can be determined, if practiced, can truly extinguish the suffering of practicing this Dharma, this is the determination to liberate. Therefore, no one here to me
