It is said that this is because there is a distinction of loving-kindness. According to the correct treatises, the characteristics of the distinction are shown in five ways. As stated in the extensive treatise itself. The Sutra School's treatise itself shows it in seven ways. Therefore, in that treatise it is asked: What is the difference between compassion and great compassion? It is said: Compassion is merely loving-kindness, while great compassion is called great compassion because it is able to accomplish the object of action. Why is that? Because when a Bodhisattva sees sentient beings suffering, he strives with diligence to end the suffering. Furthermore, it is called great compassion because it is manifestly accomplished from having meditated from countless eons. Furthermore, if one sees sentient beings suffering with the eye of wisdom, one will generate the thought that one must surely completely eliminate the suffering, therefore it is called great compassion. Furthermore, it is called great compassion because it brings many benefits. Also, it is called great compassion because it is without obstruction. Why is that? Because the mind of compassion will generate obstructions due to remembering the faults of others, while great compassion thoroughly realizes that there is no obstruction even towards those who have committed great faults. Furthermore, compassion has unequal high and low distinctions, while this (great compassion) is equal towards all beings, therefore it is called great compassion. Furthermore, it is called great compassion because it abandons its own benefit and completely dedicates itself to benefiting others. Compassion is not like that, so this is the difference, it is said. If this is combined with the teachings of the Mahayana, then in the Ornament of the Sutras, the distinction of compassion is shown in six ways. Therefore, in that treatise it says: Not equal, not constant, not profound, not conforming, not the path, not non-objective. The six compassions are thus reversed. It is said. In the commentary on this treatise, it says: That which is the reverse of the six distinctions of non-great compassion is the six great compassions.

Because it is a distinction, it is like this: equality, constant continuity, extreme profundity, conformity, the path being completely pure, and non-apprehension. Among these, what is called equality is that all the feelings of sentient beings, such as pleasant feelings, should be recognized as suffering. What is called constant continuity is because it will not be exhausted even until the state of nirvana without remainder. What is called extreme profundity is because the bodhisattvas who have entered the ground have become equal in terms of self and others. What is called conformity is for the sake of completely liberating all sentient beings from suffering as much as possible. What is called the path being completely pure is because the afflictions that are unfavorable have been completely abandoned. What is called non-apprehension is because when the patience of non-arising is obtained, phenomena are not apprehended. In the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, the distinction of that itself is shown by six aspects, which is inconsistent with what is taught in the Ornament of the Sutras, and should be understood as taught extensively in that itself. In the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice, the Compendium of Determinations, and the Treasury Treatise, it is shown that the great compassion of the Thus-Gone-One is completely accomplished by four conditions, but there is no explanation of two kinds of distinctions. In the Treatise on the Ornament of the Sutras, great compassion is also accomplished by four causes, which is inconsistent with what is taught in the Grounds of Yoga Practice and so on, and should be understood as taught extensively in that itself. Regarding great compassion, in the Treasury Treatise of the Sarvastivada school, it is shown that bodhisattvas also have great compassion, in accordance with what is taught in the Treatise on the Aspects of Enlightenment, the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, and the Ornament of the Sutras. In the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it is said: Furthermore, the loving-kindness and compassion that the Thus-Gone-Ones possess in their mind-streams are called great. What exists in the mind-streams of others is called small. If that is the case,
