The second explains the extensive exposition of the perfections. This also has eighteen doors, which are divided into eighteen types from the eighteen doors themselves, namely: the door that shows the number of items to be learned, whether many or few; the door that distinguishes the collection of the three trainings; the door that distinguishes the collection of merit and wisdom; the door that shows the six perfections to be learned with five characteristics; the door that shows that the number of perfections does not increase or decrease; the door that shows the order of the perfections; the door that thoroughly distinguishes the aspects of the perfections; the door that shows the attainment of names of the perfections; the door that shows the number of aspects of the purity of the perfections; the door that thoroughly distinguishes the five actions with those five characteristics; the door that shows the five characteristics such as being extremely vast; the door that shows that the cause and effect of the six perfections are inexhaustible; the door that shows attachment to the perfections and non-attachment to the fruit of the perfections; the door that shows the aspect of the power of the perfections; the door that thoroughly distinguishes the cause and effect of the perfections; the door that shows that sentient beings are the fault of their own actions; the door that shows the complete grasping of the nature of the dharmas of wisdom as being without self-nature; and the door that shows the three perfections. This is the first, the door that shows the number of aspects to be learned, whether many or few. This is also shown by asking and answering, and this is the door of asking. The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara: Son of good family, the basis for a Bodhisattva to learn, in brief, there are six types, etc., this is the second, the Tathagata's true answer. This also has two types, namely: briefly answering after stating the number, and listing the names as stated in the number. This is the first, briefly answering after stating the number, thus, the basis for learning, in brief, there are six types, these words

It is so. For example, generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, the perfections, are named as in the second enumeration. These six perfections are also indicated by general and specific names. Among them, the so-called "six perfections" is a general name. Generosity and discipline, etc., are specific names. Regarding the perfections, the explanations in various teachings differ. In the *Yogacarabhumi-sastra*, it is called perfection because of three reasons: time and nature are completely pure, and it is able to produce the most excellent fruit. Therefore, in this treatise, these ten dharmas are accomplished through extremely long three countless eons, and because they are not the roots of virtue of worldly beings, hearers, and solitary Buddhas, they have the characteristic of being completely pure in nature, and in order to fully obtain the most excellent fruit of enlightenment, they are perfectly accomplished through the excellence of time, purified through the excellence of being completely pure in nature, and because they bestow the excellence of the fruit, they are called perfections. In the *Sutra on the Teaching of Good Discipline* and the *Compendium of Grounds*, they are mostly explained in a way that is consistent with what is taught in the *Yogacarabhumi-sastra*. In the commentary on the *Mahayana-samgraha* translated by Lang, it is taught that the perfections are explained through three unequaled qualities. Therefore, in that commentary it says: Among them, the unequaled time is the three countless eons. The unequaled practice is the four meditations, etc. The unequaled fruit is the three bodies. When Bodhisattvas cultivate the perfections, they are generally called perfections because they possess these four meanings. The details are as explained in that treatise. In the *Mahayana-samgraha*, the six perfections are called perfections because of their excellent meaning.

It is said thus. Therefore, in that very treatise, how should one view the definitive meaning of these perfections? It is stated that since it surpasses all roots of virtue such as the generosity of worldly beings, hearers, and solitary realizers, it goes beyond, and therefore it is called perfection. In the commentary composed by Master Vasubandhu, it is said that since it has completely transcended the activities of perfections such as the generosity of worldly beings, hearers, and solitary realizers, it is therefore called the perfection of conduct. The commentary by Master Asanga also mostly teaches in this way. In the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom, it teaches that perfection is explained in five ways. The first is that which, having completely turned away from generosity and the like, turns towards the Lesser Vehicle, such as the Noble Shariputra and others, is called 'this shore.' That which is capable of accomplishing the path of the Buddha without turning back is called 'the far shore.' The second is that the six obscurations such as miserliness are called 'this shore.' The six perfections such as generosity are called 'the far shore.' The third is that the two views of existence and non-existence are called 'this shore.' The wisdom that destroys the view of existence and non-existence is called 'the far shore.' The fourth is that giving generosity and the like with the bonds of attachment is called 'this shore.' Giving generosity and the like without the bonds of attachment is called 'the far shore.' The fifth is that the great ocean of samsara is called 'this shore.' The great city of nirvana is said to be 'the far shore,' as explained in detail in that very text. In the treatise Compendium of Abhidharma, it teaches that it is called perfection by three kinds of excellence. Therefore, in that text, the first is the excellence of nature, which shows the teaching. The second is the excellence of means.
