to show the distinction. This also has two aspects: first, based on the eight superiorities, distinguishing between what is superior and what is not superior; and second, starting from what is called the first ground, generally based on other qualities, distinguishing between what is superior and what is not superior, this is the first. Like this, from the first ground to the tenth ground, each ground possesses the eight superiorities more than the previous one. But the Buddha ground has only seven superiorities, except for pure birth, which is taught with consideration for births that completely pacify all harms. The five kinds of correct births taught in treatises such as the "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra" are also taught only for the ten grounds, not including the stages before the ten grounds and the Buddhas. Furthermore, these ten grounds also include the collected ripened fruits, because the ten kings are the nature of ripeness, possessing both substance and transformation. The stage before the grounds, whatever is caused by the lord of the perfections with defilements, is born from a completely pure cause, because it is the superior ripened fruit of its own nature, therefore it is called pure birth. Therefore, even in the sutra below, it says, "Because it arises from accumulating extremely pure roots of virtue," so it excludes pure birth. Furthermore, all the qualities of the first ground are equally present in the higher grounds, but one should recognize the superiority of the qualities of one's own ground. Like this, the second is distinguishing between what is superior and what is not superior from other qualities. This also has two aspects: teaching what is not superior, and teaching the distinction between what is superior and what is unsurpassed, this is the first, teaching what is not superior. Like this, all the qualities that the first ground possesses are also present in each ground, just as the ten perfections are present in all the grounds, but in the first ground it is generosity.

The perfection of generosity is particularly superior, while the other nine are not particularly superior. The second ground is where the perfection of ethics is particularly superior, while the other nine are not particularly superior, and so on for the other grounds. All the qualities of the ten Bodhisattva grounds are supreme, and the qualities of the Buddha ground should be known as unsurpassed. These two differentiate the grounds based on the distinction between supreme and unsurpassed. The qualities of the ten grounds are supreme because they are accompanied by further excellence, while the qualities of the Buddha ground are called unsurpassed because there is no other excellence beyond them. The Sutra of Excellent Ethics states: "Unsurpassed Bodhi is called unsurpassed because it possesses seven unsurpassed aspects: because the body is adorned with the thirty-two marks, and because it fully embraces the unsurpassed bliss of benefiting oneself and others; unsurpassed perfection is like the perfection of lifespan, the perfection of ethics, and the perfection of conduct; unsurpassed wisdom is like the four individual correct knowledges, and so on; unsurpassed inconceivability is like the perfection of the six perfections; unsurpassed liberation is like destroying the two obscurations of the Thus-Gone One; unsurpassed conduct is like possessing the conduct of the noble ones, the conduct of the gods, and the conduct of Brahma. The Thus-Gone One is called a great being because he is an unsurpassed body. He is called the Great Compassionate One because he is an unsurpassed embrace. He is called Perfection because he is unsurpassed perfection. He is called the All-Knowing One because he is unsurpassed wisdom. He is called Unsurpassed because he is inconceivable. He is called Nirvana because he is unsurpassed liberation. He is called the Perfectly Awakened Buddha because he is unsurpassed conduct." Thus, the meaning is explained.

Because it possesses these seven qualities, the Buddha's qualities are said to be unsurpassed. Chapter Fifty-Seven. The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara also said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, for what reason is the birth of a Bodhisattva the most excellent among births in existence? From this point onwards, the fifth section, "Birth is particularly excellent," begins, showing the detailed distinctions of the grounds. This also has two aspects: the request and the answer. This is the first, the Bodhisattva's request, and as it was previously said that "birth is particularly excellent," what intention was behind saying it was particularly excellent? This is the summary of the question. The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara: Son of good family, it is because of four causes and conditions, etc. The second part shows that the Tathagata correctly accepts and answers. This can also be divided into two: briefly answering the number, and explaining the four conditions in detail. This is the first. Because of accumulating very pure roots of virtue, and because of obtaining the ground through the power of particularly examining with intention, and because of completely protecting sentient beings with compassion, and because of oneself being without all afflictions and eliminating the afflictions of others. This is the second, explaining the four conditions in detail. The first is because of accumulating very pure roots of virtue in seeking great Bodhi. This is exactly how the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* shows obtaining birth through the power of knowledge. The second, particularly examining with intention, refers to obtaining birth through the power of aspiration. Therefore, the *Sūtrālaṃkāra* says: Therefore, obtaining birth through the power of aspiration refers to the Bodhisattva who has entered the great ground. These two teachings are the proximate cause. The third, compassion, refers to the Bodhisattva abiding on the ground.
