Having thus completely gathered, it is in order to ripen them completely by means of skillful means. Gathering by means of the Dharma is truly gathering, ripening them completely by means of the skillful means of entering and following. Those objects of gathering are also called objects of gathering because they rely on the five kinds of actions of gathering. Among them, the five kinds of actions of gathering are: completely gathering by relying, completely gathering in order to cause virtue to be truly accepted, completely gathering in order to cause virtue to be well and truly strived for, completely gathering in order to cause virtue to be well and completely ripened, and completely gathering in order to cause virtue to be well and completely liberated. Thus it is said. In the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, ripening is to be known as sixfold in brief, namely, the nature of ripening is as follows: the seed of virtuous Dharma, and whatever is the nature of constantly relying on virtuous Dharma. Among them, the individuals who are ripened are fourfold in brief: those with the lineage of the three vehicles, and whatever individual who has no lineage. The distinctions of the aspects of ripening are sixfold in brief: the ripening of the faculties, the ripening of the roots of virtue, the ripening of wisdom, and ripening small, medium, and large. Among them, the means of causing to ripen are to be known as twenty-seven, from the increase of the elements to the ripening of both of them. Among them, the individuals who are ripened are sixfold: the Śākya-view holder of the ground of practice by faith, the purification of superior intention, namely, the one on the first ground, the one abiding on the ground of practice, namely, from the second ground to the seventh ground, the one abiding on the ground of certainty, namely, the one on the eighth ground, the one abiding on the ground of the accomplishment of certainty in practice, namely, the one on the ninth ground, and the one abiding on the ultimate ground, namely, the one on the tenth ground and the Buddha. The characteristics of that ripened individual are as follows: the individuals of the three vehicles, each one also has three kinds of distinctions of aspects, thus it is said. The details are as explained in that very treatise. Among them, what is called pure birth is as follows: Bodhisattvas

Taking various forms of rebirths to benefit sentient beings is called pure rebirth. Therefore, in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it says: The rebirths of Bodhisattvas, for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, all without fault, are summarized into five types. What are the five? Eliminating harm, entering into harmony with them, great birth, lordly birth, and the final birth. Among them, the rebirth of eliminating harm is like this: For example, a Bodhisattva is born in times of famine, poverty, and great harm. Having been born there, he satisfies the needs of all beings. For beings with many diseases, in order to pacify those diseases, after making aspirations, he takes the body of a great physician who has attained the accomplishment of holding mantras. For sentient beings who are severely harmed by enemy armies, with skillful means of subduing them according to the Dharma, in order to pacify the harm of the enemy armies, he becomes a powerful king. For beings who are in discord with each other, in order to reconcile and eliminate thoughts of hatred, he becomes earnest in speech, and so on. Rebirth that enters into harmony with them is like this: For example, a Bodhisattva, through the power of aspiration or attainment of freedom, after being born in various places of rebirth in the six realms, those who do not practice virtuous deeds, he practices virtuous deeds. In order to practice virtuous deeds, as well as to teach the Dharma, this is called rebirth that enters into harmony with them. Great birth is like this: For example, when a Bodhisattva is born, naturally, in terms of lifespan, color, caste, and wealth, he becomes more excellent than all the worlds, manifesting maturity. Lordly birth is like this: From the first ground of the Bodhisattva, the Joyful Ground, up to the tenth ground, the rebirths from the lord of Jambudvipa, to being born beyond Akanistha

That which is most excellent among all places, where only Bodhisattvas who have attained the supreme abode are born, up to the great powerful one, that is called being born in the place of its lord, and that is accomplished by the power of their karma. And the final birth is like this: when the Bodhisattva's accumulation of Bodhi is completely perfected, they are born in the house of a minister or in the palace of a king, and they manifest the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment, and they perform all the deeds of the Buddhas, that is the final birth, which is called the future. Whether Bodhisattvas are born in the past, future, or present, in all auspicious, good, and excellent births, or will be born, or whatever birth it may be, all those births are exhausted in these five births, and there is nothing above these, and there is nothing more excellent than these. Except for being born in the place of a child, why is that? Because these five births are considered to be those of wise Bodhisattvas. Those births are the fruit of the great Bodhi ground, and relying on them, Bodhisattvas will quickly manifest the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment, so it is said in the scriptures, and that is called the pure birth, as it is described in detail in that very scripture. The Sutra of Good Precepts and the Treatise on the Entire Ground also mostly explain it in accordance with what is explained in the Ground of Yogic Practice. Furthermore, if the birth of a Bodhisattva is endowed with four causes and conditions, it is called a pure birth, and those four causes and conditions should be understood as they are explained below. If a Bodhisattva abiding on the ground has completely abandoned misconduct, how could there be births such as the complete pacification of harm? It is said that it is spoken with regard to speech and emanation, therefore, in the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom, how do the Bodhisattvas, the great beings
