If the object of giving is small, but with a compassionate mind, thinking that these suffering sentient beings have little merit and are incapable, if they could do something for the Tathagata or the Tathagata's stupa, they would be happy, so they give the object and thought only to others. Others also use these objects to make offerings to the Tathagata or the Tathagata's stupa, but not to the Bodhisattva, this should be understood as an offering made only by those other than the Bodhisattva. Among them, the offering made only by oneself is the greater fruit of merit. That which is caused to be done only by others is the greatest fruit of merit. That which is done in common is the exceedingly great fruit of merit, which should be understood as incomparable. Among them, the Bodhisattva makes offerings to the Tathagata or the Tathagata's stupa with food and drink, food, bedding, cushions, medicine for illness, utensils, etc., as well as respectful praise, prostration, rising, joining palms, the work of offering, such as burning incense, powdered incense, scented oil, various flower garlands, umbrellas, banners, streamers, offering various lamps, various praises, prostrating with five limbs, circumambulating to the right, and similarly, offering with inexhaustible giving, etc., this should be understood as the Bodhisattva making offerings to the Tathagata or the Tathagata's stupa with gain and respect. Among them, the Bodhisattva or the Tathagata or the gain and respect of the Tathagata's stupa, uses these to make offerings for a long time, with many objects, abundant objects, manifest, unmanifest, done by oneself, done by others, from the depths of the heart manifesting joy, making offerings with strong faith, and dedicating this root of virtue to the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment.

That which is called the seven great offerings of a Bodhisattva is like this. A Bodhisattva does things for the Tathagata or the stupa of the Tathagata with his own hands, not despising, not being lazy and letting others do it, doing it respectfully and not disrespectfully, doing it without distraction, not doing it with a mind completely defiled by afflictions, obtaining it from great-minded people such as kings who are extremely devoted to the Buddha, not pretending for the sake of respect, not making offerings with discordant objects, such as smearing with cow dung, washing with ghee, fumigating with gugul incense, using arka flowers, etc., and also not using other things that are not suitable as offerings, this should be understood as the six undefiled offerings of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas also do not accomplish with their own share of possessions, nor do they obtain by searching. Although Bodhisattvas have not obtained dominion over wealth, whatever offering to the Tathagata, whether it is in Jambudvipa, or the four continents, or the small thousand world, or the middle thousand world, or the great thousand world, or in the ten directions of infinite worlds, whether they are small, medium, or large, all of these, Bodhisattvas rejoice with the joy of having faith, and with the specialness of a mind having aspiration for the great. That is to say, even the small offerings of a Bodhisattva, because of the accumulation of great Bodhi, completely accumulate immeasurable great offerings to the Tathagata, therefore, Bodhisattvas should always and constantly strive with a mind of ease and joy. A Bodhisattva should cultivate a mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings, even for a very short time, even for the time it takes to milk a cow, cultivate a mind with compassion, a mind with joy, and a mind with equanimity, likewise, for all formations, cultivate the perception of impermanence, for impermanence cultivate the perception of suffering, and for suffering cultivate the perception of selflessness.

Meditate on the thought of impermanence and the thought of the benefits of Nirvana. Recollect the Tathagata, and practice recollecting the Dharma and the Sangha. Similarly, even slightly, for a brief moment, with a single-minded wisdom of patience towards all dharmas, believing in the inexpressible essence of Suchness, abiding with a non-discriminating and signless mind, what need is there to mention what is before and beyond this? Similarly, guarding the vows of the Bodhisattva, striving in Shamatha and Vipassana, and the dharmas of the path to enlightenment, similarly, striving diligently in the Paramitas and the Four Means of Gathering, this is the practice of the Bodhisattva, which is the most supreme and unsurpassed offering to the Tathagata. Because the previous attainment and all types of respectful offerings cannot even approach one-hundredth or one-thousandth of this offering, even when expanded to the extreme. Therefore, it should be understood that these ten ways are all the ways of offering to the Tathagata. Just as offering to the Tathagata, offering to the Dharma and the Sangha should also be as similar as possible. The details are as described in the Sutra itself. Extensive explanations can be found in the Sutra on the Teaching of Good Morality, the Compendium of Grounds, the Ornament of the Sutras, the Commentary on the Holy Perfection of Wisdom, and the Great Commentary on the Specific Explanations. Among these, purifying and maturing sentient beings refers to the Four Means of Gathering themselves. Therefore, in the explanation of the treatises, it says: "The conduct of maturing is, in short, the Four Means of Gathering are called the conduct of maturing sentient beings." Those sentient beings who abide in the words of the Noble Ones and are to be tamed are so because they are gathered by the two means of material possessions and the Dharma. Among these, gathering by material possessions is the companion of wisdom.
