arises from causes and conditions, and hearing the teachings that it is not created by Ishvara and others, one understands the meaning of impermanence and so forth, and accumulates the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, etc. However, knowing that conditioned phenomena are like illusions and are not truly existent, one clings to phenomena as having a true nature, and therefore cannot understand the selflessness of characteristics, or cannot understand the two kinds of ultimate selflessness as shown above, this is the concluding statement. One will not truly become weary of all conditioned phenomena. One will not truly become free from attachment. One will not truly become liberated, nor will one be completely liberated from all the afflictions of the afflictions. Nor will one be completely liberated from all the afflictions of karma. Nor will one be completely liberated from all the afflictions of birth, this is the second, showing the fault of not knowing selflessness. Thus, because of not knowing the selflessness of characteristics and so forth, one will not truly become weary of all conditioned phenomena and so forth. Among them, truly becoming weary as it is, refers to the path of application. Truly becoming free from attachment, refers to the path of no interruption. Truly becoming liberated and so forth, refers to the path of liberation and the path of distinction. The three kinds of afflictions, karma, and the afflictions of birth, should be understood as taught in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle Abhidharma and the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness Only. The Tathagata also teaches the Dharma to them, namely, starting from "the selflessness of characteristics" and "the selflessness of ultimate reality," this is the second, showing the true explanation according to what is desired. This also has two aspects, namely, showing the true explanation of the teaching itself, and showing the intention of the teaching. This is the first, namely, the concluding statement that it is taught because it is suitable for those who abide in the ten dedications and practice application and so forth to hear this teaching. Thus, they

In order to be completely disgusted with all irrational actions, in order to be completely free from attachment, in order to be completely liberated, in order to transcend all pervasive afflictions of afflictions, in order to transcend all pervasive afflictions of karma, and in order to transcend all pervasive afflictions of birth, this is called the second teaching, which shows the intention of what was said. Like this, abiding in practice and so on, and in order to quickly accomplish the path of application and so on, and in order to transcend the three kinds of pervasive afflictions, therefore, two kinds of selflessness are taught. This means that after hearing this Dharma, from the selflessness of birth, they truly believe in the selflessness of characteristics and the selflessness of ultimate truth. They think of distinguishing well, applying their minds rationally, and knowing as it is, etc. This is the third benefit of the teaching. It explains the benefits of abiding in the stage of application, and from "other's freedom" onwards, it explains the benefits of the two states of abiding on the ground. This is the first, explaining the benefits of abiding in application. There are also different explanations for abiding in application. Some say that this belongs to the second countless eon, because it is the near application of great joy, just as the unobstructed samadhi belongs to the first dhyana. Some say that this abides in the ten dedications, belonging to the first countless eon, because they have now entered the path. Although there are two explanations, Master Dharmapala agrees with the former explanation, as it is said in the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness-Only: "Because it is close to the path of seeing, the name of application is established." In this stage, because of hearing the teaching that explains the latter two selflessnesses, through the yoga of cultivating the four kinds of seeking and the four kinds of knowing as it is, the consciousness of the object is not abandoned, but the object is empty.
