Similarly, abiding in the selflessness of the person, yet manifestly clinging to the selflessness of phenomena, one becomes frightened. From the non-existent entity that is inexpressible like the sky, one engages in various fabrications, thereby superimposing onto forms and so forth, and having superimposed, one completely seeks attachment to it, like the skull of a meditator. A Bodhisattva is not like that; this is a distinction of distorted abandonment. Among these, the distinction of mental distortion is as follows: for example, if a painter himself were to paint a terrifying image of a yaksha, and so forth, it is extensively explained. Similarly, distorted abandonment, abiding in the selflessness of the person, is also distorted by inverted perceptions and so forth, arising from objects born from one's own conceptualization. A Bodhisattva is not like that. This is a distinction of mental distortion; thus, the distinctions are shown in four ways. How does it show the cause? Through the example of the magician and the example of the two trees, and through the two examples. The first example fully shows the discrimination of grasping, that is, discriminating with the wisdom of the selflessness of phenomena the grasping of the wisdom of the selflessness of the person as merely an aggregate. Therefore, the wisdom of the selflessness of phenomena is called the discrimination of grasping. Because it exists when it exists, the wisdom of the selflessness of the person is the cause of the wisdom of the selflessness of phenomena, just as a magician is the cause of an illusion. Just as an illusion devours the magician, so the wisdom of the selflessness of phenomena of a yogi devours the wisdom of the selflessness of the person. It is empty because it is devoid of the nature of conventional terms. It is false because it is devoid of complete conceptualization. It is hollow because it is the nature of what should be abandoned. It is without essence because it is not momentary. Discrimination is like devouring. The second example is like this: it completely shows the perfect and thorough understanding. Among these, it is like this: perfect and thorough understanding follows from the two, correct attention that conceptualizes from the grasped and the grasper, thereby giving rise to the wisdom of self-awareness that arises individually.

O! The conceptualization of what is grasped is the wisdom of realizing the selflessness of persons. The conceptualization of the grasper is the wisdom that connects to the selflessness of phenomena. Like the lower and upper sticks of a fire drill, properly attending to them, following the attention of those two, the wisdom that arises from individually ascertaining knowledge is called thoroughly understanding what is truly as it is. This example of the two sticks shows the cause. Just as fire arises from rubbing two sticks together and inevitably burns those two sticks, similarly, what arises from the cause of connecting to the wisdom of realizing the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena is the selflessness of phenomena. Because the wisdom of individually ascertaining knowledge arises, the nature of those two connecting wisdoms being completely examined, for that truly individually knowing as it is, is like burning. Therefore, those two show the cause. How does it show the ultimate of emptiness? In one way, by fully showing the wisdom of the selflessness of phenomena as it is. Light Protector, for example, the example of lighting a lamp and all darkness disappearing. Therein, seeing as it is, because not knowing and knowing are the same, it is empty because it is free from the nature of terms. Therefore, because there is no manifest clinging, it is ungraspable. Because it is momentary, it is without action. Thus, it shows the ultimate of emptiness. How does it show the power of emptiness? In one way, by fully showing the antidote to abandoning actions and afflictions. Light Protector, for example, the example of a house or building or small house where no lamp has been lit for a hundred or a thousand years. Therein, fully showing by abandoning means that the moment the light of wisdom arises, it abandons the actions and afflictions that have entered since beginningless time. Therefore, it shows the power of emptiness. Thus, entering into proper attention is entering the Middle Way. If afflictions are abandoned so quickly, then why do Bodhisattvas wander for so long?
