The merits of being in that position have been described. The Blessed One said that if one gives alms to those who have gone to the animal realm, one will receive a hundredfold reward. If one gives to an ordinary person, one will receive a thousandfold reward. If one gives to a monk who possesses discipline, one will receive a hundred thousandfold reward. If one gives to a preacher of the Dharma, one will receive immeasurable rewards. It is also said that if one gives a single meal to the Tathagata, parents, and the sick, one will receive immeasurable fruits. In the Mahayana Sutra called "The Noble Sutra of Perfect Tranquility, the Samadhi of Miraculous Transformation," it says that if a Bodhisattva takes alms and divides them among the emaciated, the poor, the beggars, and the students, then by that root of virtue, after changing lives, he will become a Chakravartin king endowed with great miraculous powers. It is also said that whoever possesses the six senses in completeness is transformed from having kept the precepts. In the Sutra Teaching the Emission of Rays of Light Everywhere, it says: Sometimes from a single ray of light, ten different colors arise, each with superior, intermediate, and inferior qualities, which are born from generosity. Sometimes from a single mixed ray of light, twenty colors arise, each with superior, intermediate, and inferior qualities, which are born from keeping the precepts. Thus it is said. The novice who keeps the precepts, and the pure monk who upholds the precepts, perform the bimonthly Uposatha, wear the sewn Dharma robes, offer the alms bowl, staff, and so on, and take alms again with a pure mind. All the gods will be delighted, and respectfully prostrate with folded hands, (saying) "O gods, we, these people, will accomplish their errands." Just as the lord of the gods, Indra, and the other thirty-three gods, respectfully serve in due order, one obtains well-being in this life, and the (result) of future lives is inconceivable. To renounce and keep the precepts is to repay the kindness of the Buddha. Thus it is said. Therefore, if one learns well the vows of individual liberation and generates the mind of enlightenment, it is like saying, "The vows are the foundation of vast aspirations." This is further divided into two: the mind of aspiration and the mind of engagement.
