Furthermore, the thought that "this is enough, there is no need for more" is also an obstacle to unsurpassed Bodhi. Why? Because unsurpassed Bodhi must be attained by completely perfecting all the accumulations of merit and wisdom, both worldly and transcendent. Therefore, even to accomplish one pore of a Tathagata requires a measureless ocean of virtue. How, then, can the lazy attain it? Those who are content with a mere morsel and rejoice in their own homes cannot ascend the lion throne. Therefore, to counteract these obstacles, this supreme vehicle is taught. In this context, the Blessed One praises generosity and also criticizes it; he praises discipline and also criticizes it. All the other perfections should be understood similarly. However, there may seem to be a contradiction here. If generosity is truly virtuous, why is it criticized? This is spoken with regard to the intention of the individual, so there is no contradiction. For those who are miserly and extremely stingy, the praise of generosity is given to encourage them to engage in giving: "Generosity is a great treasure that follows like a shadow, it is the supreme ultimate spiritual friend, giving clothes has ten virtues, giving food has ten virtues," and so forth, as found extensively in the sutras. This is not false, but if one is content with just that and does not engage in the accumulations of discipline, learning, and so on, then it is criticized. This is because the suffering results of samsara come from contaminated generosity, so it is not sufficient. Even those who possess generosity will be born in the lower realms if their discipline is flawed. Discipline is the cause of rebirth in higher realms, so it is primary. It is also like the earth, as it is the cause of generating all virtues. Learning is also similar, as it is the cause of clear wisdom, pacifying the sickness of afflictions, and so on. Therefore, in this way, generosity and so forth can be a fault from one perspective and a virtue from another. This is taught according to the intention of those to be trained, based on the enlightened intent of the Tathagata.

Therefore, the Tathagatas have no faults. For example, doctors praise milk and ghee for those suffering from bile fever, while they praise purgatives for those suffering from phlegm fever. The so-called "desire and prideful conduct" refers to the conduct of desire, which means the universal conduct of desire in the future. Similarly, the conduct of pride is also the universal conduct of pride. These two are also individual obstacles. Being too attached to perfect things such as houses, fields, sons, wives, wealth, grains, clothes, ornaments, elephants, horses, etc., thereby abandoning these and not truly accepting virtue, these are all because of the thoughts that will inevitably arise from them, as well as obstructing renunciation and the cultivation of the aspects of enlightenment, therefore craving conduct is an obstacle. To counteract this obstacle, this supreme vehicle is taught, praising other pure Buddha-fields, such as the adornments of Sukhavati and so on. After hearing about those vast riches that they have never seen or heard, they only consider their own perfection to be poverty. Then, they develop a longing for that place, and in order to obtain those, they abandon everything and strive to achieve it, therefore, this is spoken with regard to the thoughts of beings. For humans, gods, asuras, etc., whoever possesses beauty, strength, power, light, fortune, a pleasant voice, quick reflexes, intelligence, lineage, lifespan, enjoyment, retinue, etc., perfect qualities, because they have not seen anyone equal to themselves, they are filled with pride, arrogant and conceited, and do not revere the Tathagata, these are prideful conduct. This is an obstacle to pleasing the appearance of the Tathagata, the cause of all perfect qualities, and making aspirations for enlightenment. Therefore, to counteract the faults of this obstacle, this supreme vehicle is taught. The Bhagavan especially praised the perfect qualities of other Buddhas, for example, the lifespan of that Tathagata called Arya Amitabha is immeasurable. The light of nature
