It is said that the thought of the mind obscured by thick afflictions, and the thought of the mind without the power of view. Regarding celibacy, the non-diligent, the arrogant, those who cannot completely overcome sorrow, and other non-Buddhist adherents who are diligent in wrong paths, these four should be understood in order. Because the thought of the mind devoid of desire for virtuous Dharma, the thought of the mind that wastes the Buddha's Dharma, the thought of the mind driven by the continuation of samsara, and the thought of the mind that wastes the means of liberation. In order to completely protect sentient beings, exertion is initiated because he sees the realm of sentient beings filled with many harms, and thus initiates such exertion: I shall completely protect these sentient beings. This is widely proclaimed. Then, from where and how should one completely protect, and how does one become a complete protector? By distinguishing these in detail, the detailed distinctions of complete protection are shown. From where should one completely protect? From the all-afflictive karma, the all-afflictive afflictions, and the all-afflictive birth. Because one should completely liberate, completely purify, and completely expel, this is said in order. How should one completely protect? By abiding in morality, samadhi, and wisdom, one is gathered by the three trainings. Because one should abide, one should place, this is said in order. Since it is the place of equal abiding, samadhi and wisdom are regarded as one. One should abide in morality in two ways: by entering through dispelling doubt, which is what is said by "because one should be completely satisfied." For those who have entered, by causing them to hold manifest joy, one abides in an unmoving state, which is what is said by "because one should abide correctly." Placing in samadhi and wisdom means subduing the near afflictions of sinking and excitement, which is what is said by "because one should subdue." How does one become a complete protector?

It is what enables the attainment of the two aspects of the realm beyond suffering. Because it is said, 'One should completely pass beyond sorrow.' Thus it was spoken. Therefore, being endowed with disillusionment towards all things that have become conditioned in this way, and being endowed with looking upon all sentient beings, abiding excellently in the benefit of omniscient wisdom, relying on the wisdom of the Thus-Gone One, striving to protect all sentient beings, and thus completely contemplating: 'By which path can these sentient beings who are so afflicted and have fallen into many near afflictions be manifestly liberated and placed in the exceedingly blissful state of nirvana?' Therefore, having both disillusionment and looking and benefit, it completely shows that it possesses three causes. Among the three causes, the cause of turning away from all afflictions is because it possesses disillusionment. The cause of not abandoning samsara is because it possesses looking upon all sentient beings. The cause of initiating diligence is because it possesses knowing the benefit of omniscient wisdom. Therefore, one should meditate on the path of that which possesses benefit, and one should completely ripen those who possess looking, because it is said, 'Relying on the wisdom of the Thus-Gone One, striving to protect all sentient beings.' Starting from the union of completely grasping the means, because it is said, 'By which path of means can these sentient beings who are so afflicted and have fallen into many near afflictions be manifestly liberated and placed in the exceedingly blissful state of nirvana?' Among these, what is called affliction and falling into many near afflictions, affliction is the all-pervasive affliction of birth. Near afflictions are the all-pervasive afflictions of afflictions and karma. The exceedingly blissful nirvana is by means of the three vehicles. Among these, what is called the union of completely grasping the means, in brief, it should be known as three aspects: understanding the ultimate, understanding the higher from before accomplishing the ultimate, and understanding the union in the place of accomplishing it. Among these, the ultimate is the aspect of wisdom without obscurations.
