Because one does not see the faults of other lives, and because one does not see the faults of this life at all, one is obscured by the dimness of the darkness of ignorance, by cataracts, and by darkness. For what reason is it said that these wretched beings are obscured by the dimness of the darkness of ignorance, by cataracts, and by darkness? Because one sees evil as happiness, it is called the dimness of the darkness of ignorance. Because one does not see the faults of other lives, it is called cataracts. Because one does not see the faults of this life at all, it is called darkness. The cause of that ignorance, the latent tendencies having increased, and having engaged in the opposite of well-practiced retinues, being far from undefiled wisdom is also a fault. For what reason is it said that one has entered into a great thickness of darkness, far from the light of wisdom? The word 'thickness' refers to the latent tendencies that are the cause of ignorance. Its increase is fully shown by the word 'great'. Going to the evil destinies, the place of great harm, is also a fault. For what reason is it said that one is confused in the black darkness? There, harm is fully shown by the word 'darkness'. Wherever one goes in the darkness, one will be harmed. Being in accordance with that dharma, the evil destinies have become places of great harm. Going there is shown by the word 'confusion'. Because one does not see the signs of having committed sins, dying with a view accompanied by regret is also a fault. For what reason is it said that one has entered into seeing vultures? Because one did not see the signs of having committed sins in the past, and because one did not properly cultivate the antidote, the view of regret is seeing vultures. 'Entering' refers to the time of death. One who is in accordance with these is the complete purification of the eye of wisdom, free from obscurations. In order that I may somehow attain the suchness of all dharmas, just as they are, without relying on others, I must purify the eye of wisdom, free from obscurations. When searching in other lives, the fault of those who have entered into well-practiced conduct is entering a dangerous path. For what reason

Alas! These sentient beings have entered the perilous path of samsara. The perilous path refers to inherent nature, obstacles, and depletion, which should be understood. Inherent nature is the root of poverty, hence it is samsara. Among these, there are eight kinds of obstacles to liberation. Because they are in accordance with the lower realms, they manifestly tend towards precipices, that is to say, sentient beings manifestly tend towards the precipices of hell, the animal realm, and the realm of Yama. Because they abide in regarding the suffering result as happiness, they enter a net, that is to say, they enter the dreadful net of wrong views. The reason for this is that they are covered by the latent tendencies of ignorance, so they are densely and completely obscured. Therefore, although they can speak, they do not understand that suffering, that is to say, they are densely and completely obscured by ignorance. Because they have entered a wrong path that is contrary to true bliss, they enter a false path, that is to say, they enter a wrong path that has strayed from the right path. Because they are blinded by attachment to enjoying the results they have obtained, they become blind, that is to say, they become blind. Because they are born in unfavorable circumstances and due to the faults of carelessness, they do not please the arising of the Buddha, so they are separated from the teacher, that is to say, they have no guide. Brahmins and others regard the Brahma realm and so on as liberation. From the place they thought to go, their minds turned to other things, that is to say, they regard as liberation that which is not liberation. Because they are universally attached to desiring the realm of Mara, their merit is exhausted, and they are destroyed by humans and non-humans, so they are seized by robbers, that is to say, they are seized by the robbers of the path of Mara. Depletion is of three kinds. Because they abide in a bad place, there is no skillful teacher, that is to say, they are separated from a skillful guide. Abiding in the place of the enemy, that is to say, entering the dense forest of Mara's thoughts. Being far from the land of virtue, that is to say, being far from the thought of the Buddha. In accordance with these
