They are distinguished by the very different things that are united as friends, the very different things that are subject to others, the very different places, the very different livelihoods, and the very different perfections, in that order. Fear is the apprehension of falling into what is undesirable, and is similar to having an unpleasant mind. Moreover, due to the difference in the change of mind and body, it is called panic and shyness. After that, it shows what those fears are, and how they are separated from the basis and non-existent, namely: O sons of the Victorious Ones, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, as soon as he attains this very joyous ground of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, have these fears, such as: fear of lack of livelihood, fear of lack of sections, fear of death, fear of evil destinies, fear of shyness in the retinue, all of which are non-existent for him. Why is that? Because in this way, he is free from the concept of self, and even if he does not think of himself as poor, how much less does he think of being poor in all resources? Therefore, he has no fear of lack of livelihood. He does not expect anyone to serve him even a little, but rather thinks that he himself will gather those sentient beings with all the many resources, therefore, he has no fear of lack of sections. He is free from the view of self and has no concept of self, therefore, he has no fear of death. He thinks that even after I die, I will not be devoured by demons, and I will not be separated from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, therefore, he has no fear of evil destinies. If there is no one in the world who is the same as my thoughts, how much more is there one who is superior to me? Therefore, he has no fear of shyness in the retinue. These are the inconsistent aspects of the ground, and are for the purpose of fully showing the excellent characteristics of the ground. Among those fears, the first, second, last, and third are the places experienced by body, speech, and mind. The third and fourth are separation from and increase in bodies of desirable and undesirable, happy and unhappy destinies.

Because it is the place of attraction, it is the place of the body, therefore there are only five. Fears such as beating and binding are also included in these. In short, the basis of fear is shown as two: the concept of manifest attachment to inferior objects of knowledge, and the characteristics of manifest attachment to views and desires, and the smallness of the roots of virtue. The antidote to this is as follows: Because it is free from the concept of self, even if there is no pity for myself, how much more so for pity for all possessions? It should be thought of in this way. It does not expect even a little service from anyone, but rather thinks that it will gather many possessions to help those sentient beings. Because it is free from the view of self, there is no concept of self. Even if I die, I will not be devoured by ghosts, but will be inseparable from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. There is no one in the world who has the same thoughts as me, let alone a superior one? It should be thought of in this way. O sons of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas who are free from fear, panic, dread, and horror, because great compassion goes before, the excellent intention does not diminish, and they are not inferior, they diligently practice in order to perfectly accumulate all the roots of virtue. Being free from fear, panic, dread, and horror in this way shows the manifestation of the bodily differences arising from the previously mentioned fear itself. Not diminishing and not degenerating is because they are not mixed with afflictions and inferior intentions. In order to perfectly accumulate all the roots of virtue, it refers to those roots of virtue that are held by that ground. So, how is the practice done? Through the three perfections: perfection of intention, perfection of action, and perfection of dedication. This is shown by three tens. Due to the power of faith, due to the increase of joy, due to pure devotion, due to the increase of attachment to existence, due to love and the manifestation of attaining compassion, and great love.
