The discipline, and possessing perfect views, furthermore, without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, diligently practicing yoga, understanding the measure of food, closing the doors of the senses, and regarding even the slightest fault as terrifying, that person will think: "Merely relying on this Pratimoksha discipline will not completely accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. So, how can I completely accomplish the benefit of myself and others? I have heard that there is something called the Mahayana, which completely accomplishes the benefit of oneself and others. I should seek it from a virtuous and qualified spiritual friend." After thinking this, he should please that holy being who is worthy of being a lama for a long time. After that holy being is pleased, he should touch his head to his feet and say: "Holy being, please be kind to me. Please grant me the means to completely accomplish the benefit of myself and others, the path of the Mahayana," and request with a sincere heart, free from deceit. Then, that virtuous spiritual friend should examine that disciple with three kinds of examination, namely, examining through conduct, dreams, and the descent of worldly and transcendent deities, and knowing that he is a vessel, the lama, with a joyful mind, a smiling face, and a mind free from material possessions, gain, and respect, and with a loving heart for that disciple, in a place secluded from sinful beings, should prepare the ground by smoothing it well, and in that clean place, bathe and smear it with the five essences of a cow, and also smear it with excellent fragrances such as sandalwood, and scatter fragrant flowers there. There, the images of the Three Jewels, such as molded ones, and scriptures, and Bodhisattvas should be placed on thrones or platforms. There, banners and other offerings such as flowers should be prepared according to one's ability, as well as various musical instruments, food, ornaments, etc. Then, the disciple should invite the virtuous spiritual friend to sit on the throne decorated with flowers, and think in his heart: "This is the protector and refuge of all beings," and generate the perception of the lama as the Buddha.

Generate (bodhicitta). After bathing and putting on clean clothes, with a good mind, say this: Son of good family, please know. I, in this place of samsara, from beginningless time, have been tormented by many sufferings and have become very miserable. Having no protector, no refuge, no friend, please be my protector, refuge, and friend, say this three times. Then, the lama says this: Good man, you are weary of samsara and have become disillusioned, wanting to enter the path of the Great Vehicle, that is very good. Know this: The so-called Three Jewels are the protector, refuge, and friend of those who have no protector, no refuge, and no friend. With a joyful mind and a very delighted mind, make all beings the object, and from that (Three Jewels) take refuge. In order to serve and properly respect that (Three Jewels), gather as many offerings as you can afford. Say this. Then, the disciple kneels on both knees, joins his palms, offers flowers, and says this: Noble person, please listen. From beginningless time until now, I have wandered in samsara, tormented by all kinds of suffering. Please show me the path that leads to the cessation of suffering. Say this three times. Then, the lama makes all the Buddhas of the ten directions the object, visualizes the adornment of the body as unspeakable, visualizes each body having unspeakable heads, and each head having unspeakable tongues, the previously mentioned offerings of body and speech, and the vast offerings of wealth, confessing sins, rejoicing, exhorting, requesting, and completely dedicating, these are the so-called seven-branch offering. After the seven-branch offering, take refuge. Having taken refuge in this way, one should protect the precepts of taking refuge, namely, not prostrating to other gods, abandoning harm and injury to others (beings), not associating with non-Buddhists, not venerating them, and (understanding) the distinctions of the Three Jewels, with
