It is also said in the Ornament of the Sutras: One is to make effort, two is the nature of benefiting others, three is giving, and four is to become an antidote. So it is said. It is also said that desire has desire, harmful thoughts, dullness, sleep, agitation, regret, and doubt. Among them, the retinue of dullness and sleep are: ignorance, displeasure, drowsiness, immoderate eating, and discouragement, etc. The function is to discourage the mind. The antidote is the perception of light. The retinue of agitation and regret are: the discrimination of relatives, the memory of previous laughter, joy, and playfulness. The function is to make the mind not peaceful. The antidote is tranquility. On any object of focus, the mind should be placed on virtue. The object of focus is the object of the mind, as it is said in the Madhyamakavatara-vrtti-pradipavali: If the elephant of the mind is unrestrained, it should be tied to the firm pillar of the object of focus, tightly bound with the rope of mindfulness, so that the mind may abide in peace. The so-called "any one" refers to tranquility with signs and tranquility without signs. Moreover, the Guru said in the chapter on Samadhi: Here there are two kinds of tranquility: with signs and without signs. Tranquility with signs has two kinds: looking inward and looking outward. Looking inward has two kinds: focusing on the body and focusing on what depends on the body. Focusing on the body has three kinds: viewing oneself as the form of a deity, viewing bones and so on as impure, and focusing on special signs such as khatvanga. Focusing on what depends on the body has five kinds: focusing on breath, focusing on subtle signs, focusing on bindu, focusing on the limbs of light, and focusing on joy and bliss. Looking outward has two kinds: special and ordinary. The special has two kinds: focusing on the Buddha's body and focusing on the Buddha's speech. These are the limbs for entering tranquility. Tranquility without signs is: again, in that same place, from the wisdom that distinguishes tranquility without signs, higher vision without signs arises, the wisdom that does not discriminate.
