It is said, "Only after attaining clairvoyance can one benefit others," and so on. Also, in the same text, it says: Without attaining clairvoyance, one cannot fully ripen disciples; one will only die oneself. The teacher Shantideva said: Sentient beings have various inclinations, even the Buddhas cannot please them all, so what need is there to mention someone inferior like me? Therefore, one should abandon worldly thoughts. This is with a source, from the chapter on Samadhi. Therefore, considering this meaning, the teacher, the noble Nagarjuna, said: In all lifetimes, may I follow, having attained the five clairvoyances, may I always benefit all sentient beings, and universally bestow happiness. Thus he said. Relying solely on hearing scriptures without the guru's instructions and practicing meditation is also prohibited here in passing. Even if one strives in such yoga, clairvoyance will not arise, and one will not attain perfect enlightenment. Considering this meaning, the great Brahmin Saraha said in the Essence of Reality: The guru's instruction is called the taste of nectar, whoever has not drunk it to satisfaction, in the midst of the painful wilderness of many scriptures, will surely die of thirst. Thus he said. The noble Nagarjuna also said: Though one has heard many scriptures and is well-versed in the teachings, if one has not received the teachings due to neglecting the service of the guru, then one has no power even to benefit oneself, one is merely a parrot of the scriptures, that is only a cause for sorrow in the scriptures. Thus he said. Without clairvoyance, the days and nights with clairvoyance. The two shlokas beginning with "etc." are just as they are in the text. Like this, perfect enlightenment depends on the two accumulations, and the two accumulations also depend on benefiting others, which in turn depends on clairvoyance, and clairvoyance depends on shamatha-vipassana, and shamatha-vipassana depends on ethics, so first ethics is taught. Therefore, shamatha-vipassana arises from ethics, and clairvoyance arises from shamatha-vipassana, and clairvoyance does not arise, therefore, in order to cultivate shamatha-vipassana, one should strive again and again. Thus it is said. Clairvoyance is like this, such as the clairvoyance of the divine eye, the clairvoyance of the divine ear, and knowing the minds of others.

Clairvoyance, remembering past lives, clairvoyance of magical powers, and clairvoyance of the exhaustion of outflows. Such clairvoyance arises from calm abiding, therefore calm abiding should be cultivated. If the limbs of calm abiding are impaired, then even if one strives to meditate, one will not achieve samadhi even in thousands of years. The limbs of calm abiding are the nine things to be abandoned, etc., in the chapter on the collection of samadhi composed by the lama. The others are easy to understand. Therefore, if the limbs are impaired, calm abiding will not be achieved. For this reason, my lama, the venerable Palden Jangchub Zangpo, spoke of nine limbs in the chapter on the collection of samadhi, namely: what is to be abandoned, what goes before, what is to be reversed, what cuts off suffering, what causes aversion, what remembers qualities, what is to be strived for, what is related, and what is called the means of abiding. The lama said that one should know such limbs and abide well in them. The meaning of these should be looked at in the chapter on the collection of samadhi itself. Here I will write a little about the meaning of the last limb, the lama said in the chapter on the collection of samadhi: Thus, one who possesses eight limbs should have a place that is conducive, food and conduct that are conducive, clothes and friends that are conducive, and having abided in this, one should place the mind evenly. And again he said, if one does not place it evenly, one should also read the Prajnaparamita, make tsatsas, circumambulate, etc., and strive to accumulate merit. And again he said, one who wishes to place the mind evenly should cultivate the eight antidotal mental activities, its discordant qualities are these: The five faults are laziness and, forgetting the instructions and sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these five are considered faults. The antidotes to these, the eight abandoning mental activities are also, the place and abiding in it, the nature of cause and effect. Not forgetting the object, knowing sinking and excitement, abandoning them and manifestly applying, entering into peace as it is. Thus it is said. Sutra.
