Because he is a Bodhisattva, even though the great being possesses excellent wealth, he will not become arrogant or conceited because of it. Instead, with compassion, he is used by others, like a dog, like a slave, like a pariah, destroying arrogance and abiding in front of all sentient beings. Even if he is despised and harmed by others, he can endure it, and he bears all hardships and sufferings. Thus it is said. Such a person, know that he is a Mahayana practitioner. Furthermore, the signs of not losing the mind of enlightenment in life after life, as stated in the sutras, are that he is free from the three lower realms, free from borderlands, born in places where virtuous people are, born in high castes, with a beautiful appearance, great wisdom, without illness, and endowed with compassion. Thus it is said. Furthermore, he is free from the eight unfavorable conditions and possesses the ten endowments. Furthermore, the sign is that he naturally possesses the six perfections. As stated in the sutras, he possesses all the qualities from "an unknown giver" to "an unknown wise person." Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the words of the teacher Chandrakirti, it is said: When an ordinary person hears about emptiness, the joy in his heart arises again and again, arising from joy, his eyes are filled with tears, and the hairs on his body also stand up. Whoever it is, this person has the seed of enlightenment, and the ultimate truth should be taught to this person, and the qualities of realization will arise from this. Thus and so on it is said. The teacher Dhanada also said: That which is in accordance with the part of liberation is that whoever hears the words of no-self and the faults of samsara, and the words of the merits of nirvana, if tears flow and the hairs stand on end, know that this person has the root of virtue in accordance with the part of liberation, just as when a sprout grows in summer, it is known that its seed is in the ground. Thus it is said. Therefore, in the "Holy Lankavatara Sutra" it is said: From smoke, fire can be known, from water birds, water can be known, the lineage of a wise Bodhisattva can be known from the signs. Thus it is said. Thus, the initial Bodhisattva who protects the vows

Therefore, the beginner should always regard the body, dwelling, all enjoyments, samsara, and all the dharmas of nirvana as dreamlike. Towards the dreamlike Three Jewels, one should perform dreamlike service; towards the dreamlike samsara, one should feel aversion; towards the dreamlike sentient beings, one should generate compassion with a dreamlike mind; one should please the dreamlike sentient beings. One should regard all sentient beings as the guru, one should remember the unborn, one should remember the mind of bodhichitta, one should remember death, one should remember discipline, one should remember non-attachment to all things, one should remember mindfulness, awareness, caution, and proper attention. Furthermore, the beginner should always be skillful in means. For example, confessing one's own sins as the sins of others, and confessing the sins of others as one's own sins; making one's own roots of virtue the roots of virtue of others, and making the roots of virtue of others one's own; making one's own happiness the happiness of others, and making the suffering of others one's own; eliminating the suffering of others with one's own suffering; rejoicing when seeing or hearing of the happiness of others; when hearing or seeing the suffering of others, feeling compassion, thinking, "When will I liberate these beings from suffering?" One should abandon attachment to worldly dharmas, not be jealous of the gain, respect, and fame of others, and not be arrogant or conceited because one possesses noble lineage, beauty, retinue, possessions, the five sciences, gain, respect, and fame, and should not despise other inferior beings. One should dedicate one's own roots of virtue together with others to great bodhi, and also dedicate the roots of virtue of others together with sentient beings to great bodhi, confessing one's own sins together with the sins of others, and also confessing the sins of others together with oneself. Furthermore, these are the reversed and unreversed behaviors, which are excellent.
