Closing doors, practicing moderation in food, diligently striving without sleeping in the upper and lower parts of the night, relying on holy beings, knowing and seeing faults and abandoning them, confessing transgressions according to the Dharma, and protecting and increasing virtuous dharmas that are in accordance with this. Thus, if one abides in the discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas, the accumulation of virtuous dharmas will become extremely complete. If one does not even slightly accept the thought of worldly pleasures, then what need is there to mention many? The ten perfections, the four means of attraction, and the four immeasurables are the ten natures of bodhicitta. The discipline of benefiting sentient beings is to benefit sentient beings. For those who are suffering from illness and so on, one should help them by providing nursing and so on. Guiding the blind, indicating with gestures to the deaf and mute, carrying those without hands and feet, eliminating the desires of those who have desires, eliminating the suffering of those who are belittled and defeated by others, and helping those who are tired on the road with food, drink, clothing, and houses. With the art of healing, one should help patients with an unselfish mind without being weary. In short, eliminating all the suffering of sentient beings, generating the mind to eliminate suffering, and dedicating all virtues to others. The details of these should be examined in the chapter on discipline. Like this, the three vows of discipline are a collection of merit, so one should think of perfecting this collection. Therefore, pure and complete enlightenment, the vows of the bodhisattva's vows, through effort, complete enlightenment, the collection will be completely perfected. This is the meaning of this. Therefore, if you want to attain complete enlightenment and want to perfect its cause—merit—then bodhicitta

If I abide in the two paths of the Great Vehicle, striving and exerting myself, I will perfect the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, and thus realize complete enlightenment, so say the lamas. The lamas say that such training in the three disciplines of morality, properly undertaken and guarded, is virtuous for the sake of the benefit and happiness of oneself and others. The bodhisattva's training is immeasurable, for the sake of gathering the immeasurable. For the sake of manifestly accomplishing benefit and happiness for all sentient beings, it is beneficial. For the sake of obtaining the fruit of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, it should be known that its fruit is great, as it is said in the commentary on the "Twenty Verses." One who has thus skillfully learned such training from the venerable lama, and who desires to generate roots of virtue in accordance with the Dharma, in harmony with the path of the bodhisattva assembly that is in accordance with the aspect of liberation, has good imprints from previous lives. As Lord Maitreya says in the "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes": "The vessel transformed is said to be ripened, by its power and desire, increase and complete purity, these are the fruits in order." Bodhisattvas, having trained in virtue in previous lives, have become vessels for it in this life, which is the fruit of maturation. Those who have become powerful through their actions here are the fruit of dominance. The desire to return to it is the fruit of similarity. The manifest increase of training here is the fruit of human effort. Being free from the stains of its obscurations is the fruit of separation. Here, the four fruits other than the fruit of dominance are considered to be the fruit of similarity, but perfection in this itself is not, as the great scholar Shantipa said. The great scholar Vasubandhu also said that from the time a bodhisattva generates the mind of enlightenment, in life after life, they will be born in happy realms with high lineage, possessing the freedom of birth, transformed into a male, and will not lose the memory of previous lives. The bodhisattva does not tire of suffering for the sake of benefiting sentient beings. The servant in the world who cannot be bought with money is bodhichitta.
