I say, one should regard this sutra in this way. Such an unparalleled mind, a mind that surpasses all worldly minds, a mind that does not abandon all sentient beings, is what the great Bodhisattvas who have deeply entered the great earth have repeatedly cultivated and purified. They have not allowed it to decline and have protected it, causing it to increase from ground to ground. This mind is the intention of all Buddhas, so from the time this mind arises, the Bodhisattva is protected by the gods who delight in the teachings, dies with joy in their heart at the time of death, and is also protected by the gods during the intermediate state, the mother's womb, and childhood. All roots of virtue are not wasted, and the mind is endowed with a stream of merit. As the teacher Shantideva said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: All other virtues are like trees, whose fruits ripen and eventually perish. The Bodhi-mind tree constantly grows, and its fruits are inexhaustible and greatly increase. Thus it is said. Therefore, the mind of Bodhi is inexhaustible, so all the Dharmas of the worldly and transworldly paths, and all the Dharmas of the fruit, the Buddha-ground, are inexhaustible. Therefore, at that time, since such a mind has arisen, it is said: What are the qualities of generating such minds as have been mentioned? Wanting to proclaim the benefits of such a mind, in the Avatamsaka Sutra, the noble Maitreya said to Sudhana in this way: Son of good family, the mind of Bodhi is like the seed of all the Buddhadharmas. It causes the white Dharmas of all beings to increase, so it is like a field. It causes all the world to abide, so it is like the earth. It causes all poverty to completely cease, so it is like the son of Vaishravana. It causes all Bodhisattvas to be completely protected, so it is like a father. It causes all meanings and benefits to be completely accomplished, so it is like the king of wish-fulfilling jewels. It causes all wishes to be completely fulfilled, so it is like a good vase. It causes all enemies of afflictions to be defeated, so it is like a short spear. It completely covers up improper attention, so it is like armor. It causes the head of afflictions to fall, so it is like a sword. It causes the tree of afflictions to be cut down, so it is like an axe. Harm

Like a weapon, it protects from all. Like a ladder, it lifts one up from the river of samsara. Like a circle of wind, it scatters all that is obscured. Like a concise instruction, it summarizes all the conduct and aspirations of a Bodhisattva. Like a stupa, it is for all the worlds including gods, humans, and asuras. Son of lineage, thus the mind of enlightenment possesses such qualities and other immeasurable differences of qualities. Thus it is explained. Similarly, the words of the Sutra requested by the householder Brave Giving, which are quoted below, should also be cited here. Although many benefits have been spoken of in other various Sutras, and by the noble Nagarjuna, the teacher Shantideva, and others, they are not quoted here for fear of prolixity. Again, to show that very thing, it says: By reading the Sutra or listening to it from the Lama, the immeasurable qualities of the perfect Bodhicitta, having fully understood, for that reason of abiding, again and again, the mind should be generated. Thus it is said. Reading the Sutra, that is, from the Compendium of Trainings it says: The basis of the Bodhisattva's training mostly appears in the Sutras. From those Sutras, the Bodhisattva's conduct and the basis of the Bodhisattva's training are prescribed. Therefore, if one does not look at them, even if a downfall occurs, one will not know, and if one does not know, one will not be able to abandon it, so one should always respectfully look at the Sutras. And again, in the root text of that very thing, it says: Not abandoning the virtuous friend, always looking at the Sutras. The teacher Shantideva said this: The Sutras should be looked at. The Sutra of the Essence of Space should be looked at first. The Compendium of Sutras composed by the noble Nagarjuna should also be looked at after that. Thus he said, so one should first become accustomed to looking at the Sutras. Listening from the Lama, that is, the Lama is the very one who generates the mind, that is, the Lama from the lineage of the noble Asanga and the lineage of the teacher Shantideva. Then, one might think, what is the need to rely on a Lama? I think there is a need, as it says in the Sutra:
