said, how could there be attachment to all external objects? Similarly, it is also said to give away one's head and so on. Like this and so on, in the sutras, it seems that precepts are prescribed for those who are not yet mature. Wherever it is taught with regard to Bodhisattvas, it should not be practiced habitually, or it is said in a prohibitive tone that a beginner Bodhisattva should not practice it. If neither of these two is the case, then one should practice everything. Furthermore, if one practices one precept, one will not fall even if one cannot protect the other precepts. As it is said in the Sutra Taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence: "At the time of giving, patience, discipline, equanimity, etc., are extensively taught." One should not be lax about this, nor is it that one does not practice other things, but one should practice as much as one can and as is appropriate, as it is said in the Sutra of the Ten Grounds. This vow can also be accomplished by women with small afflictions who are devoted to the mind of enlightenment. Because in the Bodhisattva Pratimoksha it is said: "Shariputra, one who possesses four qualities is a truthful speaker of the Bodhisattva." Starting from here, it says: "Shariputra, a son or daughter of good family, after generating the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, dwells having exerted diligence for the sake of completely seeking virtuous dharmas." Starting from this, all those who receive the transmission and who uphold the vows should do so from those who diligently practice the Bodhisattva's precepts and who possess the vows. If this is done, if he transcends the precepts, it will be very rare, or fear of being deceived by the lama may arise, or it is not necessary to make efforts for this, but it will be accomplished with joy and respect. Therefore, Bodhisattvas, in the presence of the Tathagata, wishing to accomplish any of the precepts within this precept, will take them up correctly. Thus, then this is the general Dharma of vows. Alternatively, if there is no such spiritual friend, then visualize the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions, and take the vows by combining them with one's own strength. If not, then all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
