It is said in the scriptures that lack of faith and generating anger will cause sentient beings to fall into the great hells. Also, the Flower Ornament Sutra states that the faults of those who despise each other will cause them to decline in lifespan, radiance, and complexion. Therefore, anger and contempt are clearly the cause of the exhaustion of virtuous roots, as stated in the Moon Lamp Sutra. Among these, there are three types of virtuous roots: those arising from generosity, those arising from moral discipline, and those arising from meditation. Among these, there are two types of virtuous roots arising from generosity: benefiting others, and arising from the field of merit, which are generosity and offering to the Buddha. Some people are unable to give, and if they are attached to enjoyment, then the remedy is to make offerings to the Buddha, therefore it is said generosity and offering to the Buddha. Moral discipline arises from moral discipline. Hearing and so forth arise from meditation. The meaning of hearing lies in practice, one must keep body and mind away from bustle and conceptualization, therefore, a solitary place is mentioned. Thus, having explained the faults of harming, now, in order to explain the benefits of the initial stage, it is said "Thus" and so forth. A pure mind is loving-kindness, excellent conduct is the generation of the eye, faith is the initial action, belief is the initial faith, praise is merit. That very definitive scripture is the Sutra on Increasing the Power of Faith. The precepts are the five precepts and so forth. Among these, because the place is inferior, it is a lay devotee. Because the time is short, it is one day. Because the object is inferior, food is mentioned. Because it is little, one is mentioned. Immeasurable Dharma is, previously because the place is numerous, it is the number of dust motes in the world realm, the time is long, it is as many eons as grains of sand in the Ganges, constant is daily, the object is good, it surpasses the offering of food and clothing to the gods. Why does merely seeing the Tathagata also increase much merit? Because merit and wisdom are perfected, therefore its fruit is not meaningless. The scriptures also say that the sound of the Buddha is not meaningless, it will become the cause of Nirvana, since that is so, why would seeing the form not be so? Called Sangha.
