The deeds of Utpala arise from the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, furthermore, because of abiding in names, know it to be the work of Mara. Then, Mara spoke thus to the Bodhisattva: "When you attain complete and perfect enlightenment in Bodhi, you will be called by such and such a name." The Bodhisattva then begins to contemplate this, and even though he lacks the signs of irreversibility, he still thinks, "I have received a prophecy." He thus develops pride and also disparages other Bodhisattvas. He is unskilled in means and devoid of wisdom, not upheld by virtuous friends, and falls into the hands of evil companions, thus falling into the ground of Hearers or Solitary Buddhas. This generation of mind with pride is heavier than the four root downfalls. This too, a Bodhisattva should know as the work of Mara, as it is said. Also, in the chapter on the Emanations of Manjushri: Manjushri said, "Son of the gods, to whatever extent one engages in actions, to that extent it is the work of Mara. To whatever extent there is aspiration, to whatever extent there is grasping, and to whatever extent there is supreme grasping, to that extent it is the work of Mara. To whatever extent there is desire, to whatever extent there is attention, to whatever extent there is pride, and to whatever extent there is conceptualization, to that extent it is the work of Mara. Son of the gods, furthermore, attachment to the mind of enlightenment is also the work of Mara. Attachment to the mind of generosity is also the work of Mara. Likewise, attachment to the minds of ethics, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom is also the work of Mara. Making generosity a source of pride, holding ethics as supreme, grasping patience, taking up diligence, having signs in meditation, and the wandering of wisdom are also the work of Mara. The mind that delights in and is fond of solitary places, and falling into equanimity, is also the work of Mara. Making little desire, contentment, the qualities of purification, and the reduction of possessions a source of pride is also the work of Mara. 'I abide in emptiness, I abide in signlessness, I abide in wishlessness, I abide in non-proliferation.'"

Furthermore, dwelling in extreme solitude, thinking, "I abide in the most secluded place, I am upholding the teachings of the Tathagata," and harboring pride and conceptualization is also the activity of Mara. Son of the gods, to whatever extent there is conceptualization, various conceptualizations, complete conceptualizations, seeing, hearing, discrimination, and the objects of various consciousnesses, to that extent is the activity of Mara. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, from what does the activity of Mara arise? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, the activity of Mara arises from diligence. Why is that? Son of the gods, Mara seeks an opportunity from diligence. What can Mara do to one who is not diligent? That itself is the activity of Mara. He asked: How is a Bodhisattva diligent? How is one not diligent? He said: Son of the gods, to whatever extent there is connection to duality, to that extent there is non-diligence. Why is that? Because those who abide in the world are associated with connection to duality. Diligence is a synonym for pure connection. Pure connection is a synonym for non-connection. Non-connection is a synonym for non-elaboration. Non-elaboration is a synonym for pure connection. Son of the gods, in whom there is no connection to the eye, no connection to form, and no connection up to Dharma, this is called the pure connection of a Bodhisattva.

This is the work of a demon. Speaking of the words of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and concealing the words of the Mahayana, is also the work of a demon. Concealing profound words and showing various kinds of words is also the work of a demon. Although knowing the path of the Bodhisattva, not completely seeking the path of the Paramitas is also the work of a demon. Praising diligence, but not exhorting non-diligent beings, is also the work of a demon. Even roots of virtue, etc., not manifesting the mind of Bodhi, is also the work of a demon. Abiding in the yoga of Vipassana, but not allowing beings to truly practice Vipassana, is also the work of a demon. Seeking to exhaust all defilements, and reproaching the defilements of the cycle of existence, is also the work of a demon. Acting with wisdom, but not holding onto great compassion, is also the work of a demon. Performing all virtuous deeds without being endowed with skillful means is also the work of a demon. Not seeking the treasury of the Bodhisattvas, but holding onto the secret words of the distant world, is also the work of a demon. Although hearing much, fearing that others will know, the teacher concealing the Dharma is also the work of a demon. Doing worldly concerns and not seeking much learning is also the work of a demon. Bodhisattva Dharma speakers, not relying on, not approaching, and not respecting those who have truly entered the Mahayana and have common roots, but liking those who have truly entered the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha vehicle and do not have common roots, is also the work of a demon. When the enjoyment, wealth, and jewels, and the power of Indra or Brahma or the world protectors or kings or merchants or householders become great, not relying on, not approaching, and not respecting those who possess the greatness of the Dharma, these are the twenty kinds of demonic deeds of the sons of the gods, the Bodhisattvas. In the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati, it is also said: Bodhisattvas who are handsome and beautiful, rich and wealthy, with great enjoyment and abundant wealth, with many warehouses and granaries that are complete, because of appearance and enjoyment, and lineage and family, and servants and retinue, and merit
