It should be understood. If a Bodhisattva constantly reveres skillful means and wisdom in such a sequence, and cultivates them for a long time, it will transform into twelve distinct stages. Those stages are distinguished among the grounds because the qualities of the higher stages abide in them, from the Ground of Adhimukticarya (Practice through Aspiration) to the Buddha Ground. Among them, as long as one does not directly realize the suchness of selflessness of persons and phenomena, but merely has very firm aspiration, unshaken by demons and the like, when one practices solely through the power of aspiration, one is distinguished in the Ground of Practice through Aspiration through the path of firm aspiration. A Bodhisattva abiding on this ground, although an ordinary being, has completely transcended all the poverty of childhood and possesses countless qualities such as samadhi, dharani, liberation, and supernormal knowledge, arising from the Noble Cloud of Jewels. This itself is further divided into four stages—inferior, middling, superior, and supreme—corresponding to the four aspects of decisiveness. Thus, when external objects dissolve and a slightly clear appearance of awareness arises, that is the stage of "warmth" corresponding to the aspect of decisiveness. This is called the samadhi of obtaining appearance in this Great Vehicle. When that appearance of awareness becomes moderately clear, that is the stage of "peak" corresponding to the aspect of decisiveness. It is also called the samadhi of offering appearance. When it becomes very clear, such that an appearance of awareness arises in which external objects do not appear, because it abides in mere consciousness, it is called the stage of "acceptance" corresponding to the aspect of decisiveness. It is also called the samadhi of entering one aspect, because it enters without observing the aspect of the object to be grasped. When the aspect of the grasper and the non-dual awareness also dissolve, that is called the "supreme dharma" corresponding to the aspect of decisiveness. It is also called the immediately preceding samadhi, because it enters suchness only immediately thereafter. Until then, it is the Ground of Practice through Aspiration. The other grounds, in brief,
