Therefore, using is a Dharma to be abandoned, so one should restrain oneself, and it is sufficient to generate the mind of non-attachment, without generating the thought of "I possess." Thus, after confessing individual downfalls and restraining oneself, one should also properly take the vows as before. Again, this person is also qualified to properly take the vows. Thus, the ritual and conduct of properly taking the layperson's vows have been described. The ritual and conduct of properly taking the vows of a novice monk and a fully ordained monk are not shown here because I have clearly explained them in the clear commentary and the Vinaya. Whether it is a layperson, a laywoman, a novice monk, a novice nun, a fully ordained nun, or a fully ordained monk, with the distinction of a fully ordained nun, whoever abides in any of the seven Pratimoksha vows that are kept for life, should take the Bodhisattva vows, and cannot be taken by others, because the Bodhisattva vows will not arise in others. Those who say this have not made much effort in the Mahayana. If the Bodhisattva vows cannot arise without the Pratimoksha vows, then the Bodhisattva Pitaka and other texts that follow it would say that this is the root. It is necessary to state its necessity without a doubt, such as taking refuge in the Three Jewels in the Mahayana until enlightenment. Chandrakirti, who followed the tenets of the venerable Nagarjuna, also said in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge": "The layperson's three refuges, that is the basis of the eight vows. The complete Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, are the refuge for those who desire liberation. The Buddha, the Victorious One's two bodies, and, Nirvana and the eight noble ones. Whoever respectfully takes refuge in them, is taking refuge in the Three Jewels." The Vinaya of the Eastern Valley says that Arhats should also prostrate to Bodhisattvas, not outside the Three Jewels, and should be considered as integrated into the Buddha. Like the Stream-enterer who abides in the fruit, the seven trainees, and the monks who have renounced from the noble path, as it is said in the Abhidharma. Thus, in the vast scriptures, it is also said in the ten Bhumis.

By what measure? Possessing the nature of the noble path, how could all of them not become noble? Each quality reaching its ultimate limit, the supreme qualities of the measure of the sky, Bodhisattvas are always worthy of prostration, and the wise should also take refuge. Thus it is said. What is the meaning of refuge and the meaning of complete protection? Always from all the hosts of afflictions, and all misdeeds, and even from aging and death, the Buddha himself completely protects. All living beings, and also from the lower realms and non-means, and also from the destructible aggregates and the inferior vehicle, therefore he is the supreme refuge. Completely protecting from all harm, is by the power of the Buddha, the blind gain sight. The deaf gain hearing. Those whose minds are distracted gain the mind abiding in its own nature. The pacification of plagues and diseases, and so forth, are like this and so on. Completely protecting from the lower realms, is because the rays of light of the Buddha liberate those who have gone there, and cause those who have not gone there to abide separately. Protecting from non-means, is because of urging them to return from the views of non-Buddhists. Protecting from the destructible aggregates, is because the two vehicles cause them to return from nirvana. Protecting from the inferior vehicle, is because it causes them to solely proceed on the Great Vehicle. The Buddha himself is all-knowing. He is the Buddha, he is Bodhi, he is the fruit of the path of Bodhi. The form bodies are also the Buddha. The Dharma Jewel is that which possesses the path and the wheel. Its support, the nature of the form body, the assembly of non-returning Bodhisattvas is the Sangha Jewel. Wherever the unsurpassed Bodhi, which is most distinguished from all dharmas, is established as the Dharma Jewel, there only the form bodies are the Buddha Jewel, and at that time the path is also the Sangha Jewel. The sprout of the Buddha is the Bodhisattva, and in reality, there is nothing other than that. In some places, the part that does not have the nature of Bodhi is the Dharma Jewel. The part of realization and the form bodies are the Buddha Jewel. The path of the previous stages, such as the Vajra-like Samadhi, is the Sangha Jewel. Thus, distinguish.
