It is said that one should abide. Regarding this, the meaning of the Sutra is that the nature of appearance is the conventional truth, and the nature of non-appearance is the ultimate truth, thus it is shown. Therefore, the meaning of temporarily vowing in this way is not contradictory. One should also not doubt that the reason is not established, for like this, it is unreasonable for things to arise from themselves, because it is unreasonable for one's own essence, whether existent or non-existent, to be the cause of oneself. If the cause of things is one's own essence, then is it existent or non-existent? It is unreasonable for it to be temporarily existent, because there is no action whatsoever for it, just like a mountain carver and a snow mountain. When the own essence of a thing is established, at that very time, because it is non-different from it, the thing is also already established, so there is no action of cause from it, because it would become an infinite fault. If something is established, and something is not established, then it is also not its own essence, because it would become a very excessive fault. Even if they are not different entities, it is also not reasonable for them to be cause and effect, because the cause of these two is a different entity. If it is not like that, because there is no cause for it, the designation of "this is the effect, this is the cause" will not be established without confusion, it will only become the naming of cause and effect, and there is no dispute about names. If one thinks that different states are the cause, if that is the case, then one's own essence cannot be established as the cause, because the states and the possessor are non-different. If one admits that the states are different, then like that, the possessor will also become different, therefore, earrings, bracelets, etc., the substance of gold in the state of cause is also other, and armlets, etc., in the state of effect are also other, how can one's own essence become the cause? If it is the same as the possessor, then the two states will also become one essence, therefore, the fault is only that it remains in its own place. If it is not like that, then the possessor and the states will only become different entities, because its establishment and happiness are not one. Furthermore, if one admits that they are different entities, then the states themselves will become cause and effect, and the self

is not its nature. Therefore, being deceived by the appearance of other similar natures, one labels something as "this is gold, etc.," but not after seeing it transform into something else. It does not transform into something else, because "that" and "other" are characterized by existing in mutual exclusion. Just as when completely determining the "thatness" of a thing, one distinguishes the "other" and then completely determines it; and the "other" also distinguishes the "that" and then completely determines it. If one distinguishes in the opposite way, then it will only become an incomplete determination. Whatever is without distinction, whatever is without complete determination, these two are characterized by existing in mutual exclusion. And those that are characterized by existing in mutual exclusion cannot simultaneously exist in one subject, just as body and bodilessness are different. If it were not so, everything would become a single substance, and therefore it would follow that they arise and perish simultaneously. Therefore, the statement that "that" transforms into "other" only increases the accumulation of extreme ignorance. Furthermore, if something completely transforms, does it transform by abandoning its previous nature completely, or by not abandoning it? Similarly, does a dharma or a subject of dharma change? One should analyze in this way. If it is said that it transforms by abandoning its previous nature completely, then because a thing is without parts, if the previous nature is completely destroyed by itself, how could there be any subsequent nature? But if it is said that it transforms without abandoning its previous nature, then there will be confusion of states, and therefore in the state of old age, etc., the state of youth, etc., will also be perceived. Dharmas also cannot be reasonably said to change, because they are non-different from the subject of dharma, and the subject of dharma is of one nature, like its own nature. The subject of dharma is also non-different from the dharma, and therefore it would follow that it arises and perishes like the dharma's own nature. If it were not so, then dharmas and the subject of dharma would be completely different, and in that case, the previous dharma would perish without cause, and the dharma that did not exist before would arise, so what would arise?
