It is not so. Therefore, if one does not apprehend what is non-existent as non-existent, but apprehends what is existent as existent, then one falls into these two extremes. If there were things in the Middle Way, then what would prevent the apprehension of existence in it at that time? In the Holy Samadhiraja Sutra, it says that whatever is said to refute the existence of things in the Middle Way as abiding in the ultimate truth, that would also contradict it, namely: 'Existence and non-existence are both extremes, purity and impurity are also extremes. Therefore, having abandoned both extremes, the wise do not abide in the middle.' That is what was said. The meaning of the sutra is that if there is no self-nature of things that should be relied upon in the Middle Way, then it will be possible to say, 'The wise do not abide in the middle.' If there is a thing, then how can it not be that the wise abide in it? The Holy Chapter on Transcendence also says: 'O sons of the Victorious Ones, moreover, the three realms enter into mind-only, and the three times are also understood to be like mind, and that mind also enters into the state of being without extremes and without a middle.' The meaning of the sutra is that because the extremes of birth and destruction, and the middle of the nature of abiding, do not exist in the ultimate truth, the mind will enter into the state of being without extremes and without a middle, and will be realized. That is what they say. Others say that just as consciousness exists in the conventional, so does the external object also exist. If it is not so, then the Holy Ten Bhumi Sutra says that on the eighth bhumi, the bodhisattva completely knows the number of atoms belonging to the world, etc., which would contradict it, as it says in the sutra: 'He also knows very well the extremely subtle atoms, and those that have become large, and those that are immeasurable, and those that are differentiated. He also knows very well the differentiation of atoms as immeasurable. He also knows very well in which world realm there are so many atoms of the earth element, and likewise he also knows very well the water element, the fire element, and the wind element.' Like this, it is extensively explained. Just as consciousness is well-known, so is the external object also well-known, therefore it is also harmed by fame. If one analyzes with reason, then neither can bear the burden of investigation.
