Thus it is said. The Blessed One said: Relying solely on the mind, one does not discriminate external objects. Contemplating suchness, one should also eliminate from the mind-only. Having eliminated from the mind-only, one should also eliminate attachment to appearances. The yogi who abides in non-appearance, he has not attained the Great Vehicle. Entering into meditation is naturally accomplished and peaceful, thoroughly purified by pure aspirations. The supreme wisdom of selflessness, in non-appearance, cannot be seen. Others say that mind-only is the very nature that is thoroughly established by itself, therefore it exists only in conventional truth. But external objects do not even exist in conventional truth, because they cannot be established apart from the appearance of the mind. Therefore, in order to thoroughly show this, the Blessed One showed all phenomena as mind-only, but that is not existent in ultimate truth, because other sutras also show that it is without self-nature. As the noble Ornament of the Light of Wisdom Entering the Realm of All Buddhas says: Buddhas always, to all dharmas, who have not attained the nature of mind and know the dharmas, to those who have no object, I prostrate and praise. The Noble Heap of Jewels Sutra also says: Light Protector, if one seeks the mind completely, it is not found. Whatever is not found is not approached. Whatever is not approached is not past, nor future, nor present. Whatever is not past, not future, not present, that is beyond the three times. Whatever is beyond the three times is neither existent nor non-existent. Whatever is neither existent nor non-existent is unborn. Whatever is unborn is without self-nature. Whatever is without self-nature is without birth. Whatever is without birth is without cessation. Whatever is without cessation is without separation. Whatever is without separation is without going, nor coming, nor dying and transferring, nor being born. Whatever is without going, nor coming, nor dying and transferring, nor being born, that is without any fabrication. Whatever is without any fabrication is unconditioned. Whatever is unconditioned, that

It is said that this is the lineage of the noble ones, and it is explained in detail. Therefore, it is also said in that very text: "Light-guarding is permanent, this is one extreme. Light-guarding is impermanent, this is the second extreme. Light-guarding exists as it is, this is one extreme. Light-guarding does not exist, this is the second extreme. What is in the middle of these two extremes? It is unexaminable, unteachable, unimpeded, non-abiding, non-appearing, without discrimination, without a place to dwell. This is the correct and individual understanding of the Middle Way of all phenomena." It is said that it is not to become the Middle Way, to prove that there is a real existence, that there is a nature of consciousness. However, it is the realm of Dharma, free from all these two extremes, the nature of all phenomena without self-nature, which is the non-elaborate declaration. That realm of Dharma, because it cannot examine by itself what this is or what that is, it is unexaminable. Because it cannot be shown to others, it is unteachable. Because it does not abide in the nature of the internal realms and sources, it is non-abiding. Because it does not appear like the external realms and sources, it is non-appearing. Because it transcends the nature of the realms such as eye consciousness, it is without discrimination. Because it is not the place of all afflictions such as desire, it is called non-abiding. If the Middle Way has its own nature of mind, any real object of reality, then at that time, because there is that on it, it is permanent, or it is impermanent, how can such manifest clinging become an extreme? Following the truth of reality as it is, and the very act of proper attention should not be a place of downfall. Apart from the nature of permanence and so on, it is impossible for another form of reality to become the nature of reality. If the Middle Way does not have the nature of reality, and one thinks that clinging to non-existence will not become an extreme, that is also unreasonable. Because clinging to non-existence is also because there is no clinging to existence, so it is non-existence. Negation without an object is existence.
