And what is said there refers to the Pramanavarttika and so on. The meaning of 'said' is not directly stated, because in the Pramanavarttika and so on, it is the occasion for explaining the conduct of a yogi. The teacher spoke in that way from the perspective of the nature of the completely imputed, because the perfectly established is not established, because it is a common reasoning, so it is thought that all these words of the teacher are universally applicable. Therefore, the word 'said' is spoken. Therefore, 'because of the emptiness of characteristics' is the latter half of what is said. The first half is: 'Apart from grasping and apprehending, there is no existence of characteristics.' Therefore, it is said, 'Therefore, because of the emptiness of characteristics.' In this way, having completely abandoned the non-establishment, in order to eliminate the uncertainty, it is said, 'Even though the reason has been established.' 'Having both qualities' means having both the quality to be established and the quality to establish. The Vaisheshikas and others say that the face and so on themselves appear in that way, indicating the term 'image.' The Sarvastivadins and others say that in mirrors and so on, only another form arises. The Sautrantikas and others say that only consciousness appears mistakenly in that way. According to the views of all of them, because the face and so on and objects exist, the example is not established. Also, 'it is not appropriate to raise again' means the synonym of 'it is not appropriate to raise upwards again.' Because what face and so on are harmed by valid cognition has been established, it will become an unestablished example. It is not by the power of self-will that things appear as such a nature, how could the example not be established? Thinking that there is a particularly harmful valid cognition here, therefore it is used as an example, so it is said, 'Furthermore.' Among these, for the time being, form and so on are not the objects of image consciousness, because they appear as dissimilar to the nature of form. The syllogism is: any consciousness that appears dissimilar to the nature of something is not its object, just as sound consciousness appears dissimilar to the nature of form. Form
