Because it has (mind), it appears. It is also uncertain to think that what is called ultimate truth exists. So, mantras and so on are mentioned, and it is taught like this: Because the causes and conditions of illusion, such as mantras, have no power, they appear without mind. It is not because they do not exist in the ultimate sense. But for sentient beings, causes and conditions have power, so they appear with mind. It is not because they exist in the ultimate sense that they appear. Therefore, it means that it is uncertain. However, if the mind arises for sentient beings even if it does not exist in the ultimate sense, then there is no difference at that time. Why does it not arise in illusion as well? Because the power of causes and conditions is different. Therefore, it is said, "From various causes and conditions." If one cause and condition can produce all the results, then the mind will arise in illusion at that time, which is impossible. That is its meaning. Others said, "If," etc., meaning that from the perspective of cutting off, the ultimate truth is nirvana, and conversely, is the conventional truth samsara? When you Madhyamikas say that in the ultimate sense, it is free from all arising and ceasing, and conversely, all the characteristics of arising and ceasing are conventional, if it is established like this, then the Buddha is also the conventional truth of the characteristic of cessation that does not correspond to the arising of the antidote, so it will become samsara, and the practice of bodhi will become meaningless. If you say so, it is not certain, because arising and ceasing mutually prevent each other, and this fault will arise. When I say that although my consciousness does not exist in the ultimate sense, it only abides in illusion, because such an illusory object appears, there is no fault. This is its summary. Others, in order to prove that they have not been liberated from the fault of mutual contradiction, said, "When the nature of mind," etc. In this way, both object and mind are admitted to be illusion. Because both have no self-nature in the ultimate sense, what appears to what? Therefore, it is very unreasonable for the object to exist as it appears, and the fault of mutual contradiction still exists. We are illusory objects.

If someone says that even without external objects, it is acknowledged that understanding is possible through self-awareness, then this commitment does not have the fault of being mutually contradictory. To this, in order to prove that the fault still exists, the teacher cites examples such as "sword blade." Just as the sword blade itself, there is no object to be cut and no subject that can cut, so just as one cannot cut oneself, the nature of knowledge, too, because there is no knower and no known, it is unreasonable for oneself to know oneself. Therefore, because external objects are not acknowledged, it is unreasonable for knowledge to exist in the ultimate sense, and this fault still exists. And the meaning of "like an illusion" is not that it is completely non-existent like a rabbit's horn, but rather it refers to appearing to exist, but not existing in the ultimate sense. Therefore, even if both external objects and knowledge do not exist in the ultimate sense, they only exist in appearance, so external objects exist like illusions, therefore the fault does not exist. If someone thinks that even if other knowledge does not possess the nature of knower and known, there is no problem because self-awareness itself is a way of arguing. If someone cites examples such as "lamp" and says that just as a lamp does not need other conditions for illumination, such as the sun, and has the nature of illuminating itself, just as one illuminates oneself, the light of knowledge is the same, even if there is no knower and known, because it does not depend on other knowers, and it has the nature of knowing itself, so it is self-aware in terms of reason. Even if external objects are merely non-existent like illusions, there is no contradiction in knowledge existing in the ultimate sense. To this, in order to prove that this analogy itself is not established, the teacher said, "The lamp is not an illuminator," etc. If one acknowledges that the lamp has the nature of illuminating itself in this way, then it is very unreasonable for the lamp to illuminate itself. Why? Because there is no need to illuminate oneself. Why? Because it has the nature of illuminating, so there is no obscurity obscured by darkness. Precisely because of this, there is no need to illuminate oneself, so one is not one's own illuminator.
