A Commentary on Entering the Conduct of a Bodhisattva A Commentary on Entering the Conduct of a Bodhisattva ༄༅ ། །Herein lies the difficult commentary on the Wisdom Chapter and Dedication of Entering the Conduct of a Bodhisattva. Now, in order for a person who has placed their mind in equanimity to attain a distinguished position, the eighth chapter is spoken to generate wisdom. Upon what should one rely to generate it? In the chapter on meditation, one abides in the assembly of calm abiding. For what purpose are all these accumulations for the sake of cultivating calm abiding? They are accumulated for the purpose of generating it in the minds of oneself and others. As stated earlier in the chapter on meditation: "Having understood that afflictions are completely destroyed by the superior insight endowed with calm abiding, one should first seek calm abiding." Because of that accumulation, one should generate wisdom for the sake of attaining liberation from suffering and happiness in the minds of oneself and others. That is the meaning. Liberation from suffering refers to one's own benefit, while happiness refers to the benefit of others. Furthermore, liberation from suffering is abandonment, while happiness is wisdom. Alternatively, liberation from suffering is definitive goodness, while happiness is higher realms. Thus, when one who possesses meditation wonders what kind of wisdom should be generated for the sake of attaining liberation from suffering and happiness, it is mentioned, "Ultimate truth and..." This indicates that one should generate the wisdom that focuses on the two truths as objects. "Explained" means by the Thus-Gone One, which is the remainder of the sentence. What are their individual characteristics? It is mentioned, "Ultimate truth..." "Ultimate truth is not the object of the mind." "Mind" is merely representative, and it should also be understood that it is not the object of speech. As it is said in the sutra, "If there is no movement of mind in the ultimate truth, what need is there to mention letters?" Also, "Son of the gods, the ultimate truth is completely beyond all conventions, and is separated from unborn, unceasing speech, what is to be said, knowledge, what is to be known, and separation." Therefore. But what is that ultimate truth?

It is as if it is not the scope of consciousness. The ultimate truth is as it is according to reason. If analyzed by reason, nothing is established. As it is said in the sutra: "If analyzed by consciousness, there is no otherness, and there is nothing to be examined." And so on. The noble Nagarjuna also said: "Whatever is said, all should be known to be empty of self-nature. Empty, that is also empty. Thus, there is nothing that is not empty." And also in the Two Truths it is said: "Therefore, it is not empty." And so on. In any case, since it cannot be established, if analyzed by reason, consciousness and language cannot be made into an object in any way. Or, the so-called ultimate truth is merely the cessation of elaboration that is imputed to the characteristic of other-dependence. Therefore, consciousness and language cannot be made into an object in any way, because negation alone is nothing. Conversely, consciousness and language are conventional, as it is said in the noble Teaching on the Two Truths: "Son of the gods, if in the ultimate truth, the ultimate truth becomes the nature of the object of body, speech, and mind, then it will not be counted as the ultimate truth. It will only become the conventional truth. Son of the gods, in the ultimate truth, the ultimate truth is even completely beyond the object of the omniscient wisdom that is endowed with all the supreme aspects." And also in the sutra taught by the noble Inexhaustible Intelligence it is said: "What is the conventional truth? Whatever is expressed by the designations, letters, languages, and symbols of the world, that is it." Like this, it is thought that conventional is as it appears. For details, it should be known from other Madhyamaka treatises.

Eh! Therefore, the Yogacara refutes the desires of ordinary worldly people, and the desires of the yogis, which are superior to those of ordinary worldly people, are refuted by the Madhyamaka's view with its excellence, therefore, its characteristics should be studied, this is the concluding statement. Now, assuming that it is explained in detail for a while. However, what is the desire of ordinary worldly people? How does the Yogacara refute it? "Worldly people" and so on are quoted, referring to worldly people, Sautrāntikas, and so on. "Seen directly" refers to form and so on. "Truthfulness" refers to the fact that the external object itself is true as it appears. "Like an illusion" refers to how it appears. How to argue? "Form, etc." is quoted, and it is declared as follows: Form, etc., is mistaken for being directly perceived due to the power of the completely matured habit of elaboration, and it is not established by the measure of that appearance, because there is no reason to establish it, and because it is harmed by the measure of one and many, etc. For example, it is like perceiving impurity as purity, so it is declared. However, if that is the case, then in the category of the Dharma of the Noble One with definite meaning, what is form? Whatever form is, all of them are the four great elements, and they are caused by the four great elements. If someone asks whether it contradicts the scriptures, then, "To make the world believe" and so on are quoted, and it is declared as follows: This is taught for the sake of guiding those beings who are to be subdued, but it is not taught because things actually exist, therefore there is no contradiction, so it is declared. Have you seen such an example? "Like an illusion" and so on are quoted, as it is said in the Holy Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: Subhuti, for example, the Tathagata did not see any sentient beings to be predicted by the Extremely Peaceful One, so he emanated an emanation, and showed Nirvana. After that, that emanation did the deeds of the Buddha, predicted the Bodhisattvas to unsurpassed Bodhi, completely...
