In short, it is summarized as: the path of emanation, the path of antidote to all afflictions of emanation, and the path of dwelling in bliss in the present dharma. Among these, the path of emanation is twofold: not cultivating the formless perception of oneself, and cultivating it. These are the first two in order. Emanation, the antidote to all afflictions, is also twofold: emanation of ugly forms is the antidote to the obscuration of diligence; emanation of unpleasant forms is the obscuration of the antidote to disharmony. This is also the third, because it is the antidote to both. The path of dwelling in bliss in the present dharma is also twofold: the path of dwelling in tranquility, and the path of dwelling in accordance with liberation. Among these, the first is the four liberations, and the second is the liberation of cessation of perception and feeling. Among these eight, the function of the first and second is to manifest emanation. The function of the third is to be without all afflictions in the emanation of ugliness. The function of the fourth is not to taste the flavor of peaceful liberation. The function of the eighth is to abide in the supreme peaceful abode of the noble ones. This is the pure meaning of the eight liberations. The meaning of the words is that relying on meditation, relying on the formlessness of oneself, not cultivating the formless perception, or manifesting the form perception, contemplating the form internally, thereby observing the pleasant and unpleasant colors of external forms. This is to gradually pacify sinking and excitement. Therefore, if one sees the mind stream sinking when cultivating unpleasant colors, one should observe unpleasant colors; if one sees the mind stream excited when cultivating pleasant colors, one should observe unpleasant colors. The observation is to observe the emanated objects with faith and intention. Not making internal form perception, etc., is relying on the formless samadhi, the nature of the observer is cultivating the formless perception of oneself, or manifesting the formless perception. The rest is as before. The difference between these is in the internal self, not in the external. The contemplation of the ugly liberation
