When asked if (the Buddha) would speak words that would change (others' minds), the Blessed One said extensively, "It is not always the case, sometimes beneficial words are spoken." If the all-knowing one does not speak what should not be spoken, then why would words such as starting with Devadatta, to 'At that time there was a son with many clothes named Michila Zan,' etc., be spoken? Answer: It should be explained that although this is the case, it is necessary to seek the intention. This is not to prove something that is not beneficial to others, because it is not intended that way. If those words were spoken only with the intention that hearing unpleasant words would bring suffering, if that were the case, it was not spoken with that intention, but to avoid falling into sin. For example, if those who are like poisonous snakes that are excited to see strong poison, who are skilled at destroying the virtuous deeds of beings, who show a strong posture with arrogance, who make beings frightened to flee from the right path, and who show the endless wilderness of samsara, if they were not spoken to in that way, then their evil deeds would destroy the world. When those who are dedicated to the benefit of others and who possess compassion discourage them with Dharma-conforming rebuttals, it will be very beneficial. Therefore, it is precisely because it is initiated with the intention of administering medicine that it is not speech that leads to what is not beneficial. Once upon a time, a king wanted to execute a wealthy Brahmin because of a debt, saying, "You have a good well in your house, we need it, give it to us quickly. Otherwise, you will be executed." Then, the daughter of that Brahmin prayed, "Wealth attracts wealth, and elephants also attract elephants, O King, please send the well, and then the well will naturally come." Just like that, through this method, the well could not be sent away, thus avoiding execution. Similarly, the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, also sometimes speak unpleasant words with skillful means in order to eliminate what is not beneficial to beings.

He also declared it as such. Although there is no censure there, it is for the sake of benefiting sentient beings. Therefore, this is so: if one does not understand the mind and engages in actions such as walking, etc., why is it that merit, etc., is not seen? Therefore, in all actions, one should cultivate with the mind as the essence. If one does not understand the nature of the mind, then in activities such as walking, coming, standing, moving, speaking, and fire offerings, there is neither merit nor non-merit. If walking, etc., is undertaken to accomplish the ultimate act of killing, then at that time, walking, etc., becomes non-meritorious. However, if it is undertaken to abandon that, then at that time, it becomes meritorious. If one acts with only that much intention, then at that time, it becomes unrecorded. For what reason is this so? Therefore, in other actions as well, one should establish the mind as the primary factor, for the sake of establishing the nature of the actions of body, speech, and mind, etc., thrown by it, just as the mind is. When this is so, one should not doubt that the Tathagata's mind-stream, the means of great compassion, connected with the stainless, non-dual wisdom, cutting off all meaningless causes, and being all-beautiful, would engage in meaningless things for sentient beings. It is like a naked person prostrating to an image. Some naked people enter a temple and prostrate to an image. In that place, the images are all completely present. When one prostrates to one image, they touch the other images with their buttocks. To this, some people say: You prostrate to one image and touch the other images with your buttocks, which is an improper action. Similarly, according to those who believe that merit is obtained without understanding the mind and without mind, they will incur such faults. Therefore, if one does not understand the mind, then actions such as merit cannot be established. Here it is said: If the mind is extremely pure, then the actions will also be extremely pure. Therefore, the wise should with a pure mind

Also. Therefore, with the thought of a Bodhisattva, whether it is virtuous or even non-virtuous, everything turns into goodness, why? Because of the freedom of that mind. Non-virtue is non-virtuous because it is the ripening of suffering and bad destinies. Virtue, although it is the fruit of happiness and good destinies, is not good because it is the cause of suffering such as birth, old age, and death. All these two non-virtuous actions turn into goodness for those Bodhisattvas who have attained mastery over their minds, meaning that they abide as the cause of the cessation of the cycle of existence for sentient beings. The world depends on the mind because the mind is untamed, and it acts according to the mind's direction. Bodhisattvas have mastered their minds, so all the movements of their body, speech, and mind become of one taste of goodness. Therefore, in matters such as a lion releasing a captured animal, the Bodhisattvas' intention to kill living beings is not only non-meritorious like the Tathagata's unpleasant words, as explained above, but because they are engaged in benefiting sentient beings, it relies on the accumulation of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Cutting off a finger caught by a snake is the cause of cutting off a great deal of suffering, but the cause of producing that much suffering is not non-meritorious or non-good for doctors, and the actions of Bodhisattvas are similar. If you ask why it does not change like this for others? It is because they have not attained mastery over their minds, and because the continuum of their minds is hardened by afflictions and held by being close to awakening. Like a hunter killing his son, and a single son who has lived abroad for a long time being embraced, a lion releasing a captured animal, stabbing a thief with a short spear, and the Tathagata's unpleasant words. For example, two sons of a certain hunter were fighting near a cliff, and one of them wanted to kill his brother.
