Therefore, only the mind is called self, so the self is impermanent. Moreover, if this self were permanent, then in order to completely protect it, it would not manifest the Dharma of non-harming self-nature, like the sky. Sharp swords and flames, as well as poison and hail, cannot shake its hair. Therefore it is said: Non-harming and permanent self, what reason is there for this? In any case, the vajra will not be guarded by woodworms. The vajra without fear of harm will not be guarded by woodworms. Similarly, if the self is permanent, then the Dharma with the nature of harming is unreasonable, then the Dharma with the nature of non-harming does not exist. Therefore, either do not admit the permanent self, or you must say other reasons, but that is not said, so this is unreasonable. Here it is said: The self is only permanent, because there is remembrance of past lives. For the aggregates that perish as soon as they are produced, it is unreasonable to remember other lives. The aggregates of other lives perish where they are born, and this is only another birth. Therefore, I should not remember becoming such and such a birth in the past. If the self is permanent, then it transmigrates in other lives, so it should be remembered. In order to say that this is also uncertain, it is said: Because there is remembrance of past lives. If your self is permanent, seeing the scars caused before, why is your body not permanent? Here, in other lives, the traces of scars caused by being struck by swords, etc., some bodies with such similar scars will not be completely destroyed, and will only have bodies with such obvious scars, just as how they are experienced in birth and remembrance, they are dedicated to showing the ins and outs of other lives. Therefore, just as it is completely speculated that the self is permanent because there is remembrance of past lives, those should also speculate that the body is permanent, but this is not the case, so that does not exist.

Therefore, one should abandon the notion that these things are the same as or different from those things. If the continuum of conditioned phenomena, which is manifested by the difference of causes, is only impermanent, then it is reasonable to say that the birth of the self, which is proximately taken and nominally existent, can remember past lives. Things are not established by their own nature, so it is not unreasonable for such causes to arise or transform for these things. Therefore, one should fully examine the inconceivable differences produced by the causes of things that are not established by their own nature. For example, in a muddy yogurt container, located inside a house, covered with a large amount of thatch, one can see the footprints of a Puron person. However, it is impossible for his feet to have entered it. Therefore, through the reasons that have been and will be stated, the conditioned phenomena, which are unreasonable, without self-nature, and like illusions, are sufficient merely by being without essence. If one admits that it is without essence in this way, one cannot admit that things exist, because this depends on undoubted reasonableness. No matter what, it cannot be admitted, because others have already admitted that it is not deceptive. Therefore, just as in remembering past lives, a body with scars, as a body caused by other causes, marked by scars previously made, born from the causes of such differences of karma, is not impossible. Therefore, from the fact that there is remembrance of past lives, one cannot consider the self (Pudgala) to be permanent, because then the body would also become permanent. Furthermore, if one thinks, how does this self remember past lives? If it is only through its own nature, that is unreasonable, because that is the nature of one's own non-discriminating nature. If one thinks that it arises from having consciousness, that is also unreasonable, because that would lead to abandoning one's own nature. To illustrate this, there is the following statement: If things with consciousness, if they are knowledge itself, then it will not think about things with consciousness, and the Purusha (Pudgala) will be constant and unchanging. If wisdom and so on are my qualities, and they
