Showing the absence of inherent existence itself is the fruit of this treatise. As soon as the treatise is shown, it says, "Apart from form, the cause of form does not appear either." The reason for saying this is that the author composed this treatise immediately after showing the treatise on examining the aggregates, hence this saying. One's own school cannot tolerate this, therefore, for the time being, one's own school will say this, and it should be connected in this way. Regarding this, the Blessed One said, "Great King, these six elements are persons." This is because other schools' scriptures say so, the six elements, namely earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness, their respective characteristics are hardness, moisture, warmth, movement, separation, and the ability to distinguish, which is asserting the nature and existence of the six elements. Like non-existent things such as flowers in the sky, they are not shown as the cause of a person, which is an example of an unfavorable category. Therefore, the teacher vows that even earth and so on do not have the cause of form, which would be a violation of the promise, because the author of the treatise said, "Apart from form, the cause of form does not appear either." This vow would violate the promise of the Blessed One's teaching that "Great King, these six elements are persons." If the Tathagata says in name that the six elements are persons, and promises it, there is no fault, this is what one's own school would say, if you Madhyamikas say that the Blessed One said "Great King, these six elements are persons" is what the Tathagata said in conventional truth, we Madhyamikas promise, we do not have the fault of violating the promise. Because it is promised to be shown in ultimate truth, it is not without fault, this is what our own school thinks, the Blessed One said "Great King, these six elements are persons."

Since you acknowledge that the meaning of the word "exists" is ultimate, you Madhyamikas do not have the fault of contradicting what you acknowledge. If you say that it is not reasonable because it is not established, then it means that if you Madhyamikas say that what is said to be ultimate is not established for us, so it is not reasonable. It is not not established, that is to say, for you Madhyamikas, what is said to be ultimate is not not established, this is to establish it. In order to show the measure of that, ultimately the elements such as earth exist, because they have characteristics. As for what the Blessed One said does not ultimately exist, that has no characteristics, like a flower in the sky. The earth and so on have characteristics such as hardness, therefore, since they have characteristics, the elements such as earth exist, so they say. After saying that, those are also arranged in order as the subject, the property to be established, the means of establishing, the example of the contradictory side, the pervasive connection, and the conclusion. In response to saying that, here the commentator himself explains, for that, here because the nature of space is easy to express with emptiness, and it shows that it does not exist, so it is also easy to refute the remaining elements, therefore the teacher only spoke about the space element, "Before the nature of space, there is no space at all." and so on. Because of non-difference, it is thought that if there is a difference, then there will be before and after, the basis of the nature of space and the nature are not different, therefore the teacher thought so, before the nature of space, there is no space at all. In order to show non-difference, the Vaibhashikas say that space is only non-obstruction, therefore non-obstruction is space, and they establish that it exists and so on. The Hinayana Vaibhashikas say that the nature of space is non-obstruction, therefore non-obstruction

Obscuration and space are not different, they are inseparable. Those spaces, are also established as existent, but this is not established. Why is it not established? Because it must be established by the very existence of non-obscuration, and the establishment does not succeed. For example, saying "sound is impermanent because it is impermanent," just like that, here also saying "space exists because it is space." For example, saying "sound is impermanent because it is impermanent," that is like one aspect of the proposition, so it is not established. Similarly, the Vaibhashikas say "space exists because it is space," that is also one aspect of the proposition, because it must be established by the very existence of non-obscuration, and the establishment does not succeed, so the existence of space is not established. Or, those who are hostile to the tenets of the Madhyamaka treatises say this: Why is it that the basis of the characteristic and the characteristic itself, which make sequential or simultaneous existence untenable, are not admitted to be different? Just as the marks of a great man are not reasonably different from the great man. This is said by those of their own sect who are hostile to the tenets of the Madhyamaka treatises and who believe that the elements exist as substances: You Madhyamikas say, "Before the characteristic of space, there is not the slightest space." If the basis of the characteristic and the characteristic itself establish that space exists sequentially or simultaneously, and if the basis of the characteristic and the characteristic itself are different, then it can be established that "before the characteristic of space, there is not the slightest space." The basis of the characteristic and the characteristic itself, just as the marks of a great man are not reasonably different from the great man, because they do not admit that they are different, the reason of the Madhyamikas is not established. Here some say that the object of the sound of characteristic is the basis of the characteristic, so the characteristic is the agent, and the basis of the characteristic is the object. These two are different in the way of expressing and being expressed, so here you, the speaker, do not admit that the basis of the characteristic and the characteristic itself are different.
