Aging, sickness, death, and so on, the phenomena of the aggregates cause harm. Those wise ones who do not abide in or cling to those aggregates, and who do not become particularly attached, are not tainted by the phenomena of the world; that is the Perfection of Wisdom. How does one not abide in it? As an answer to that question, it is said therein: The nature of the world is like space; even space has no nature. Therefore, by realizing it, one is not tainted by the phenomena of the world. Another verse is spoken. Just as space has no substance and no characteristics, likewise, by realizing that phenomena such as the aggregates also have no substance and no characteristics, one is not tainted by the phenomena of the world, it is said. That is the Perfection of Wisdom. Similarly, in the Sutra of the Three Hundred Verses, it is said: A Bodhisattva should not give alms while abiding in form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena. The meaning of that statement is also established, and the source of trustworthy statements also proves that the aggregates are devoid of inherent existence. That is a statement that establishes the negation of form as a cause, and that is also the Perfection of Wisdom. Similarly, in the Sutra of the Descent into Lanka, it is said: The three realms are merely designations; in reality, there are no things. The evil thoughts imagine the nature of designated things. The meaning of the statements made, and the source of trustworthy statements, also prove that the aggregates are devoid of inherent existence. That is a statement that shows that the aggregates exist only nominally, and that in ultimate truth, they are devoid of inherent existence. To show that very meaning, it is also said therein: If one analyzes with intelligence, inherent existence cannot be grasped. Therefore, the Thus-Gone One has shown that those are inexpressible and devoid of inherent existence. Those statements are established because, in ultimate truth, if one analyzes phenomena with intelligence, neither subtle nor coarse inherent existence can be grasped; therefore, the Thus-Gone One has shown that those phenomena are inexpressible and devoid of inherent existence.

Any doctrine that is established, that source of convincing scriptural authority also proves that the aggregates are devoid of inherent existence. That is the Perfection of Wisdom. Because the immeasurable sutras of the Great Vehicle have explained that the aggregates are devoid of inherent existence, therefore, here also it is explained that the aggregates and so forth are devoid of inherent existence. Thus, the establishment of those convincing scriptural authorities is the merit of explaining the aggregates as devoid of inherent existence. Therefore, I have not explained that the aggregates are devoid of inherent existence merely by my own thought, by dry speculation, but because those scriptural authorities also exist. The fourth chapter, called "Examination of the Aggregates," from the commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, Lamp of Wisdom, closely arranged by the teacher Lekdenjé (Śilabhadra), a vast commentary closely arranged by the teacher Chenrezik Zhultuk (Avalokiteśvaravrata), is complete. Chapter Thirty-three. Now, in order to show that the elements are devoid of inherent existence by refuting the distinctions of the opposing side of emptiness, the fifth chapter will be composed, by the power of the meaning. Here, the word "by the power of" should be understood as having two meanings: one is the meaning of the cause of engaging in a commitment, and the other is the meaning of connecting with what will come from the text below. The meaning of the words is the same as before. Among them, having made it the power of the meaning of the cause of engaging in a commitment, it is said, "Now, by refuting the distinctions of the opposing side of emptiness." Emptiness is one's own side. The opposing side is the side that is being refuted, such as saying that the sense bases and so forth have inherent existence. The distinction is what the other party says, such as that earth and so forth have existence, because they have the characteristic of being a reason. "By refuting that" means that by making it the power of refuting that distinction of the opposing side of emptiness, the fifth chapter will be composed. Having made it the power of the meaning of connecting with what will come from the text below, it is said, "By the power of the meaning of showing that the elements are devoid of inherent existence, the fifth chapter will be composed."
