It is said that one should strive to show that space is truly existent. In response to this statement, the commentary here points out that it also has the fault of reasoning and the fault of example, because it merely remains at the level of commitment. To prove that space exists in reality with the famous reasoning that it is 'not obscured in the conventional,' is a contradiction in the meaning of the reasoning, and therefore it is not permissible. There is also the fault of lacking an example, because there is no example of similar dharma to prove that space exists in reality. Because in reality, no object has been proven to exist. Therefore, the other party's proof merely remains at the level of commitment, because it lacks reasoning and example. Alternatively, since the Vaibhashikas and Vaisheshikas say that space is a substance and is unconditioned, therefore, to refute their views, it is said: 'Before the nature of space, space does not exist at all.' This is to refute the views of the Shravaka Vaibhashikas and the heretical Vaisheshikas who say that space is a substance and is unconditioned. The teacher explains the previous verse in another way and connects it to this. The so-called 'becoming a substance' is establishing a commitment, which refers to what is the meaning of 'Before the nature of space, space does not exist at all'? It means that before the nature of space, space as a substance does not exist at all, this is establishing a commitment. The so-called 'it is unborn and famous in both sides is the dharma,' refers to the established commitment that 'Before the nature of space, space does not exist at all,' its dharma as a reasoning is that the unbirth of space is famous in both sides of the opponents. The so-called 'the example depends on it, such as rabbit horns, etc.,' refers to the established commitment that 'Before the nature of space, space as a substance does not exist at all,' its example of similar dharma must be shown according to the object to be proven and the dharma of proof, such as what is to be proven by rabbit horns, etc.

And there is not even a little bit of transformation into Dharma objects, and it is known to both sides that there is no arising of the Dharma of realization. Here, it can be inferred that, from the ultimate point of view, space is not a real thing, because it does not arise, just like a rabbit's horn. These are the subject, the object to be proven, the means of proof, and the example, which are combined in order. For example, a rabbit's horn is not a real thing because it does not arise, and similarly, space is not a real thing because it does not arise. Similarly, reasons such as having no cause, having no result, and not existing should also be stated. That is to say, "Before the nature of space, there is not the slightest space." This statement shows that, from the ultimate point of view, the reason why space is not a real thing is "because it does not arise," which is only a symbol made to approach the realm of the sound of nature. The reasons on that side are "because it has no cause," "because it has no result," and "because it does not exist," and so on. Those who say that space is the nature of sound, sound itself is space, so the fault of reasoning is the same as before. The Samkhya school believes that space arises only from sound, so space is the nature of sound and is real. For those people, sound itself is space, because the cause and effect are the same, so the fault of reasoning is the same as before. For example, "space exists because space exists" and "sound exists because sound exists," etc., because this is only one aspect of the meaning of the commitment, the meaning of the reasoning is not established, as before. Here, some people say that if this meaning is the intention of the author, then the author would only say, "Apart from the name of space, there is not the slightest space." Here, the commentator explains by arguing that the nature of space and space are not other, to which the commentators of the Vaisheshika school say, your

This point of arguing that the nature of emptiness and the sky are not otherness and explaining it is not the thought of the treatise writer, the venerable Nāgārjuna, but rather you have arbitrarily argued and explained it according to your own thought. If this point were the thought of the treatise writer, the venerable Nāgārjuna, then in that case, when the treatise writer, the venerable Nāgārjuna, was composing the verses, he should have only said, "Apart from the name of the sky, there is no sky at all." Since he did not say that, but rather said, "Before the nature of the sky, there is no sky at all," thus it is only showing that the nature of the sky and the sky have no before or after. Therefore, this point that you have argued and explained that the nature of the sky is not otherness is not the thought of the treatise writer, so it is said. In response to that statement, the commentator here himself said that merely showing that there is no before or after accomplishes the refutation of otherness, therefore that is not harmful. The treatise writer only showed that there is no before or after as a means of refuting otherness, therefore the treatise writer's showing that there is no before or after alone accomplishes the refutation of otherness, so your objection does not harm me. If how does merely showing that there is no before or after accomplish the refutation of otherness? Therefore, since the Vaiśeṣikas assert that the basis of the nature and the nature are otherness, if those are otherness, sometimes there will also be a before and after, because they are other, like a pot and a blanket, etc. Therefore, it is said, "If it occurs before the name, then it will become the fault of being without nature." The Vaiśeṣikas, the basis of the nature and the nature
