It should be known that the very existence of the act of seeing is the seer. Because for the seer, there is an agent and an object. These words should be applied in order to the subject, the dharma to be proven, and the proving dharma. Here, that which has no attachment to anything has neither agent nor object, like a flower in the sky. This is an example of the opposite. The seer has the act of seeing and the object to be seen, which is a closely connected combination. Therefore, it should be known that the very existence of the act of seeing is the seer, which is the conclusion and the result of valid cognition. In response to "Thus it is said," the commentator says that since all forms of true seeing have been negated here, if there is no seeing, then the seer is also not established. If there is no seer, then where are your object and seeing? For that which is not seen by anyone, there should be no object to be seen. Because this is merely the absence of a seeing seer, there should also be no agent. This is what is meant. Thus it is shown that if you establish the seer because there is an object to be seen and seeing, then we have already negated the truly existent seeing, which does not see with all characteristics such as grasping that which is in contact with the object or grasping that which is not in contact, and form is also not its object. Therefore, since there is no object to be seen and no seeing, the seer is also not established. If there is no seer, then your object to be seen and seeing are also not established. This is what the author of the sutra meant. Then, your reason that "because there is an agent and an object" is either not established in the ultimate sense or is contradictory in meaning. This is the conclusion and the result of valid cognition. True establishment is the non-establishment of the meaning of the reason, and if it is established conventionally, then it is contradictory in meaning. Some of their own schools say, etc., the Sautrantikas and Vaibhashikas say that all conditioned phenomena arise from the power of other factors such as causes and conditions and have the nature of being immovable, therefore the Madhyamikas have proclaimed the absence of an agent and the absence of self for these conditioned phenomena.

To say that the object of sight, form, and the act of seeing, the eye, do not exist in terms of lineage, demonstrates that it is not lineage. Among these, regarding the formations that are free from the influence and fluctuation of other causes and conditions, the statement that the eye does not see, and that there is no self that sees other than that, what is meant by saying 'of lineage' is that all formations arise from the influence of other causes and conditions, are selfless, and are characterized by immovability. Because there is no agent, the Madhyamikas do not regard the eye as seeing those things, meaning there is no agent. And to show the absence of self, saying that there is no self that sees other than that, is the definition of 'lineage.' The statement that the object of sight and the act of seeing do not exist is not desirable, because they have four results, such as consciousness. Therefore, saying that the object of sight, form, and the act of seeing, the eye, do not exist demonstrates that it is not lineage. These are also applied in order as the subject, the proposition to be proven, and the proof. For that which does not exist, there are no results such as consciousness, contact, feeling, and craving, because it is selfless, like the eye of a blind person. This is an example of a dissimilar instance. Because there are four results such as consciousness for the object of sight and the act of seeing, this is the proximate combination. Therefore, saying that the object of sight and the act of seeing exist is the conclusion and the result of valid cognition. In response to that statement, the commentator himself explains here: If, as has been shown, the object of sight and the act of seeing are not established, then, because there is no object of sight and no act of seeing, there are no four, such as consciousness, because there is no condition. This is what is intended. Because, as has been shown previously, according to scripture and reasoning, the object of sight and the act of seeing have not arisen, and because the object and the subject themselves are negated, when the object of sight is not established, because there is no object of sight and no act of seeing, there are no four, such as consciousness, because there is no condition. This is what is intended: if there is no cause, there is no result.
