"Memory and cognition, and reasons such as the arising of knowledge, vowing that there is a self, those reasons are not established." Like the objects experienced, memory is the dharma of memory. Cognition is the dharma of formation. For the objects of thought, the arising of knowledge, etc., even if there is no self, the differences in the various states of mind and mental factors will arise due to the power of the aggregation of causes and conditions that are determined separately. Therefore, the other party's reasons are not established for Buddhists. Because there is no self other than the aggregates, the basis is also not established. Furthermore, "If the body with senses is used as proof that there is a self, then the reason will not be common, because there is no following example." It means that taking the body with senses as the basis, because there are memories etc. as the target, so arguing that there is a self, what is it similar to? Because there is no similar example, the reason becomes uncommon. For memories etc. that are selfless, one can also see memories and cognitions, and the arising of knowledge etc., so the meaning of the reasons such as memory is also contradictory. If someone thinks, "The word 'I' can be established on some things, so the meaning is just like it is. For example, a Brahmin's child is called 'lion', because that Brahmin's child shows bravery, ferocity, strength, etc., so the name 'lion' can be established on him. If one mistakenly thinks that 'lion' refers to the king of beasts with characteristics such as mane, then just like the momentary collection of body, senses and consciousness, the appearance of the establishment of memory, cognition and the arising of knowledge, etc., one thinks that 'I' refers to the 'I' who owns these things is existent." The other party uses the existence of the establishment of memory etc. to welcome the doubt that the 'I' exists outside the collection of body, senses and consciousness, to this, the teacher said: "If the word 'I' is just like its meaning, because it can be established on some things, just like the word 'lion'."
