For the sake of knowing. Just as when turbid water is agitated, the face cannot be seen, so too when the mind is not evenly placed and is obscured by obscurations, it is the same. When the elephant of the mind runs wild, on the stable pillar of the object of focus, with the rope of mindfulness firmly bind it, and gradually subdue it with the hook of wisdom. Agitation, such as impermanence, pacify it by applying the mind. Submergence in the vast object of focus, make it abandoned by meditation. Distraction on the characteristics of distraction, gather it by seeing the faults. Submergence also, by seeing the benefits of diligence, uplift it. The filth of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, which is smeared and untamed, wash it with the pure water of unattractiveness, loving-kindness, and dependent arising. Be secluded, unmoving, peaceful, and focused on pure objects, and having become workable and pliable, practice equanimity well upon it. Underneath the wisdom of equipoise, those phenomena that are to be grasped through the gate of conventional terms, on these things, investigate thus with wisdom: When analyzed by the mind, do these truly exist? If they do, then this is that; if they are other, then seek that. Tormented by partiality, the mind suffers, and peace will never be realized. Conditioned and unconditioned dharmas are the aggregates, sources, and elements. For the sake of abandoning the obscurations of afflictions, it is well explained to the Hearers. For the sake of abandoning the stains of the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, for those endowed with compassion, therefore, only at the very beginning, the aggregate of form should be examined. There, too, first the elements, by the reasons as explained, here, earth and so forth, if in ultimate truth, are not the nature of the elements, because they are made and have causes, like consciousness. Earth is not the nature of hardness, but is the nature of the elements, like wind. The function of earth is not holding, but is of the nature of being made, like water. Although non-existent, if at that time, the reality of earth is thought to be earth, it is not reasonable for yogis to arise and disappear in it. By the power of the meditation of meditators, it is not reasonable for earth to be moist, because there is no change in its nature, or else it is not earth itself. Likewise, water, fire, and wind are not the reality of wetness and so forth. Their functions are also gathering,

Race. In the conventional sense, such as wind, it is not that qualities are not desired to be equal. Because it is the object of the body's senses, and because it is a source, it is like earth. Earth and so on are not truly existent, because there are no collections of parts. Whatever is shown as such, like a forest, is not seen as truly existent. Earth and so on are the minds of objects. That is also desired to be not truly existent, because it has causes and because it is destructible, like the minds of forests and so on. The sound that indicates earth and so on is not desired to be a truly existent expression, because it is equal, like armies and so on, just as the sound that indicates is not desired. Palasha, Panada, and so on, are not desired to be the makers of the forest, because of reasons such as having causes, like roots and so on. The forest that has parts, such as Palasha, is not made, because each of them is not complete, like any branches and so on. The sound of forest is uncertain, it does not enter into the number of many things, because it is examined by the mind of a special one, like the sound of a fine vase and so on. Why is it that form is not truly perceived by the eye sense in the ultimate truth? Because it is accumulated, like sound, and because it is transformed from the elements, like that. Form is not perceived by the eye, because it is transformed from the elements, like its own form. Pleasure and so on are the cause of elements, and because they are expressed, like taste and so on. Likewise, form is not a change of elements, because it is an element, like fire and so on. With reasons such as having causes, it should be understood like the mind. Therefore, the characteristics of form, such as color, shape, accumulation, subtlety, and grossness, and all the various analyses, should be understood as a combination of reason, and should be understood as a negation. The way to negate sound, smell, taste, and touch is also the same. In the ultimate truth, the eye sense does not see form, because it is different from mind and mental factors, like the king of mountains. Or, the eye does not see form in the ultimate truth, because there is no real consciousness and no birth, like skin and so on. The eye is not the object of form, because it does not grasp its own form, like the senses of hearing and so on, and because it has form, like taste and so on. Likewise, the seer without eyes is not seen because there is no example, it is the nature of the seer.
