The Essence of the Middle Way: A Verse Summary The Essence of the Middle Way: A Verse Summary In Sanskrit: Madhyamakahridaya-karika. In Tibetan: The Essence of the Middle Way: A Verse Summary. Homage to youthful Manjushri! By what is that nature not extremely examined, not a consciousness, not a basis, not manifest, not examined, not knowable, without birth or death, and blissful, not a conceptualization, nor an appearance, without characteristics, nor a clarifier, not two, not without two, and not is, pacified and abandoning entry into wisdom, without letters, by letters, by compassion itself the one who shows the way, the unerring teacher who speaks, to that one I respectfully prostrate. For the sake of accomplishing the benefit of others, through asceticism, those who have generated great bodhichitta, for the sake of holding that as nectar, I will speak a little with ability. Bodhichitta is not to be abandoned, the asceticism of the Able One is truly steadfast, to seek knowledge of that, is the practice of accomplishing all purposes. Love and compassion, adorned with great wisdom, the seed of enlightenment, bodhichitta, therefore the wise do not abandon it. Intelligent, with great courage, and unable to bear the suffering of others, having undertaken true diligence, powerful and wise, with the wisdom of no appearance, having looked at all the worlds, from beneath the impure ground of samsara, one should liberate others by liberating oneself. Whoever, with the sharp sword of wisdom, has cut all bonds and become liberated, possessing the nature of compassion, for what reason are the helpless suffering, in the unbearable prison of samsara, bound by the chains of desire and so on, having drunk the wine of carelessness, slumbering with the sleep of ignorance, by the thieves of conceptualization, those who have stolen all the collections of virtue, if one does not liberate them, what is the benefit of the power of the powerful? Whatever is accomplished by the strength of the hand, even the small pleasure born of desire, is eaten by a single enemy, that too is blamed by the wise, even the wheel-turning king and the lord of power, and Brahma are extremely established, cutting off craving and, in common with the gate of means, taking and exhausting and ultimately, not changing with suffering and so on, pacifying all suffering, that nature.

What is the nectar of understanding meaning? Furthermore, I, deluded by the demons of past afflictions, Am like planting what turns into a wound. What suffering do suffering patients endure? Who in other lives Have shown kindness, respect, and benefit? What is there to repay them, Other than repeating sorrow? Wise ones who rejoice in their hearts With the joy that comes from doing for others, Are not harmed by worldly things, Which are like fiercely burning swords. By not engaging in immoral conduct, All doors to evil destinies are blocked. By cultivating the view of emptiness, The arising of afflictions is destroyed. Wise ones, through their meritorious deeds, See the six realms as a festival in a garden. There is no fear Of being seen as a prison of existence. They are not in existence because they see faults, They do not abide in sorrowful liberation because of love. Those who are disciplined for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of others, Even in existence, they abide. Neither do they fixate on cyclic existence and sorrowful liberation, Nor on the two or non-two. Wise ones do not abide anywhere, Yet they abide in existence. Rich in the seven precious limbs of enlightenment, A source of immeasurable qualities, Worshipped by gods and demigods, Having attained the turning of the wheel of the sacred Dharma, With fame like scattered pearls, And speech like the spotless light Of the full autumn moon, They cause the ten directions to flourish. For the sake of the lineage of the Three Jewels, The noble sons, the source of qualities, The gods, nagas, and others, with the crowns of their heads, Establish offerings to the teachings, For the sake of accomplishing their own and others' benefit, Those ones have passed well into sorrowless liberation. What else is there besides the depletion of the body's essence? That too is passing into sorrowless liberation. Like an elephant in its arrogance, One does not think of subduing and separating the brain. Like a barbarian who has hired the edge of the ocean, One does not think of protecting the mandala of the earth. Likewise, even lowly sentient beings Do not hope for the Buddha, Who is the source of deep, unsurpassed, and vast Qualities beyond measure. Who would not generate faith in their minds Towards the precious qualities of the perfect Buddha, The wondrous palace, inconceivable, That subdues all appearances? Who, being brave in doing for others, And possessing the conduct of a great being, Does not abide in endless cycles As if it were but a single day? What wise one, even having passed away,
