Whatever you are, that is also the nature of this world. Therefore, by examining the sentient world, the examination of the world of formations is also established. This is called "Examination of the Tathagata," the twenty-second chapter. The Root Verses on the Middle Way with commentary by Buddhapālita, Volume Nine. Here it is said: Attachment, hatred, and delusion, are said to arise from pervasive conceptualization. Lovable and unlovable inversions, arise entirely from this dependence. Here, attachment, hatred, and delusion are extensively taught in the sutras to arise from pervasive conceptualization. Since they arise entirely from dependence on the inversions of the lovable and unlovable, therefore attachment, hatred, and delusion exist. Here it is said: Those that arise in dependence on the inversions of the lovable and unlovable, they are without inherent existence, therefore afflictions do not truly exist. Those that arise from pervasive conceptualization in dependence on the inversions of the lovable and unlovable, they are without inherent existence, therefore afflictions do not truly exist. Furthermore, the existence or non-existence of a self, cannot be established in any way. If there is no self, how can the existence or non-existence of afflictions be established? Why? To whom do these afflictions belong? That also does not exist. Afflictions belong to someone, but to whom those afflictions belong does not exist in any way. If that which is absent, what exists? Afflictions do not exist even slightly. If nothing exists, afflictions exist, and they do not belong to anyone, if you think like that, then it should be said: Like one's own body, afflictions do not exist in the afflicted in five ways. Like one's own body, the afflicted does not exist in afflictions in five ways. Just like one's own body,

Just as the view of the five aggregates does not exist in five ways, similarly, afflictions do not exist in five ways in the mind that possesses afflictions. Just as the view of the five aggregates regarding one's own body does not exist in five ways, similarly, the mind that possesses afflictions does not exist in five ways within the afflictions. Furthermore: Attractive and unattractive inversions, Do not exist from their own nature. Attractive and unattractive inversions, What are the afflictions that rely on them? If the inversions of attractive and unattractive do not exist from their own nature, then the inversions of attractive and unattractive are not true. Whatever is not true does not exist. If the inversions of attractive and unattractive do not exist, then the afflictions that arise in dependence on them do not exist. How can the afflictions that have them as their cause exist? It is said: Forms, sounds, tastes, and tactile objects, And the six dharmas, Are considered to be the basis of attachment, aversion, and ignorance. The six, forms, sounds, tastes, tactile objects and dharmas, are considered to be the basis of attachment, aversion, and ignorance. If these bases exist, the inversions of attractive and unattractive will universally arise, therefore, in dependence on the inversions of attractive and unattractive, attachment, aversion, and ignorance arise. Here it is said: Forms, sounds, tastes, and tactile objects, And the few dharmas, Are like a Gandharva city, Like mirages and dreams. Like a magical person, Like an image, How can attractive and unattractive arise from them? Forms, sounds, tastes, tactile objects and dharmas, are singular, without separation, without anything, without mixture, without inherent existence. Like a Gandharva city, like mirages and dreams. Like a magical person, like an image, how can attractive and unattractive arise from them? Furthermore: Depending on what is called attractive? How is unattractive established? Attractive does not exist without dependence, Therefore, attractive is not reasonable. Depending on what is unattractive?

Because the pure that is based on the impure does not exist prior to the impure, therefore purity is not reasonable. Relying on what is impurity designated as pure? Because it is impossible for impurity to exist without relying (on purity), therefore impurity is also not reasonable. Relying on what is purity designated as pure? Because impurity does not exist prior to purity, therefore impurity is also not reasonable. If purity does not exist, how can attachment arise? If non-purity does not exist, how can hatred arise? If purity does not exist, how can attachment arise? If non-purity does not exist, how can hatred arise? Here it is said that the sutras say that there are four perversions such as permanence, and because there are these, there will also be perversions. Among them, taking impermanence as permanence is a perversion; taking impermanence as impermanence is not a perversion, and the rest are the same. Here it is said, if impermanence is taken as permanence, then such grasping is a perversion, since there is no permanence in emptiness, how is grasping not a perversion? If you think that grasping impermanence as permanence is not a perversion, then it should be explained that since there is not even a little impermanence in the emptiness of self-nature, if there is no impermanence, how can such grasping not be a perversion? The rest are the same. If impermanence is taken as impermanence, then such grasping is not a perversion, since there is no impermanence in emptiness, how is grasping not a perversion? If you think that grasping impermanence as impermanence is not a perversion, then it should be explained that since there is not even a little impermanence in the emptiness of self-nature, if there is no impermanence, how can such grasping not be a perversion? The rest are the same. By what is grasping, what is grasped, the grasper and the grasped, all are pacified, therefore grasping does not exist. By what is grasping, is as the agent; what is grasped, is as the object; what is the grasper, is as the agent; what is grasped, is as the object.
