Furthermore, external objects such as form also do not possess these four modes. How so? For the moment, form itself does not make itself. If form were to make itself, would it make something existent or nonexistent? If it were existent, what need would there be to make it? If it were nonexistent, how could something nonexistent make itself? If it could, then a city of dryads could also build its own walls. If form were made by itself, it would be inconsistent with the statement that form arises dependently, so that is also not accepted. If it is thought that form is made by other transformed elements, that is also not permissible. Why? Because the elements that are the cause of form are not other than form itself. As it will be stated below: 'That which depends on something, is not other than it.' How can form, which is unmade, unborn, and nonexistent, be transformed? Form is also not made by both, because it is unreasonable for each to make it separately. Form is also not produced from no cause, because how can it arise from no cause if it is not made by another and not made by itself? It would lead to many faults. Similarly, it should be observed that all phenomena, such as sound, are not established by these four modes. This is the twelfth chapter, called "Examination of Suffering." Conclusion: Suffering exists, and external objects also exist, but these four modes are simply not applicable to their existence. Even if these four modes do not exist, phenomena are still perfectly established. Question: Do you want to walk with an illusory elephant? Do you think that phenomena not made by these four modes are truly existent? I think we should grasp the reasoning of what is truly existent here. Answer: What is truly existent here? Explanation: The Blessed One said, 'Whatever dharma is easily deceived is false.' All conditioned phenomena are deceptive dharmas, therefore they are false. In other sutras, the Blessed One also said, 'Whatever dharma is easily deceived is false.' For example, monks,

Thus, the non-deceptive Dharma, Nirvana, is the supreme truth. Similarly, it is also said in a verse that truth is one, without a second. Likewise, it is also said elsewhere that conditioned things are deceptive and subject to complete destruction. Thus, it is proclaimed that all conditioned things are of the nature of deception. Therefore, since all conditioned things are of the nature of deception, everything is inherently false. If something is false, how can it be truly established? What you say about things being truly established is merely driven by craving. Question: If all conditioned things are false, then while being grasped, wouldn't all things become non-existent, thus making them unclear? Answer: No, it is not so. If that which is of deceptive nature, Is false, what does it deceive? That which the Bhagavan spoke, Is the complete exposition of emptiness. If what is said to be of deceptive nature is false, then saying that the deceptive nature is non-existent, what would be deceived in that non-existent deceptive nature? How can this be said? How can anything be deceived in non-existence? If it could be deceived, then even the possessions of cowherds and naked ascetics would be harmed by thieves of Dharma. Therefore, saying it is false does not mean showing that things are non-existent. The Bhagavan, with unobstructed wisdom and liberation, seeing things as they truly are, spoke of the deceptive nature as being false, which is the emptiness of the inherent nature of things, not understood by all non-Buddhists, free from the faults of existence and non-existence, is the complete exposition. Question: What is said to be false is not the complete exposition of the emptiness of the inherent nature of things, but the Bhagavan said it thus because: Things have no inherent nature, Because change appears. What is said to be false does not only completely show that things have no inherent nature, but it is because things appear to change, and because variations appear.

And, it is fully revealed because it appears as the nature of impermanence. If asked how, it is: Selflessness is non-existence, because all things are emptiness. Because of the selfless thing, the emptiness of things is also shown in non-existence. Therefore, the nature of things is impermanent, and because it appears to change, it should be understood that things are selfless. This should be understood with certainty. Otherwise, if there is no self-nature, then what does change belong to? If things have no self-nature at all, then what does change belong to? Change is the opposite of self-nature. If there is no self-nature at all, then there is no doubt that there is no change either. Because change exists, self-nature must also exist. Refutation: If self-nature exists, then what does change belong to? To what has been said, it should be refuted: If self-nature exists, how can it change? If things have self-nature, then how can something that does not depend on others, is perfectly established from itself, is permanent and unchanging, change? Because change depends on others, not on self-nature. Therefore, self-nature should not change. Question: If self-nature should not change, then how does something different from self-nature change? Answer: It itself does not change, and other things do not change either. For something that is completely considered real, it itself should not change, and for something that is different from it, it should not change either. Why? Because the young do not age, and the old do not age. The change mentioned here is aging. Aging does not occur in the state of youth, nor does it occur in the state of aging that is different from youth. Therefore, it itself does not change either.
